Vajracchedikā Prajñāpāramit (金剛經註解)

Original Preface to the Collected Commentaries on the Diamond Sutra

The Supreme Awakening among all celestial beings, the Compassionate Sage among all saints. He opened the gate to liberation through enlightenment, revealing the truth of wisdom and ultimate reality. Radiating light from the white curl between his brows, it illuminated all the countless worlds; extending his broad, long tongue, he proclaimed the supreme Mahayana teachings. This Mahayana scripture is truly the spiritual essence of all Buddhas, the profound treasury for all sentient beings. Beyond name and form, neither matter nor mind, it encompasses heaven and earth, spanning past and present. Its truth cannot be fully captured in writing, nor can its meaning be exhausted in scrolls. Those who are deluded remain trapped in endless cycles of suffering, while those who awaken attain liberation in an instant. Though delusion and awakening differ greatly, sentient beings and Buddhas are never truly separate. Wherever this scripture exists, there is the presence of the Buddha.

The great Emperor Taizong, never forgetting the spiritual commitment entrusted at Vulture Peak, was moved to promote its circulation. Thus, he devoted his attention to the Buddhist canon, carefully reviewing various texts, selecting the most essential and profound, ensuring they remained true to the teachings, and then compiled them anew. He personally ordered their printing to spread them far and wide. Furthermore, with his profound wisdom, he composed a preface, stating: "It existed before heaven and earth, yet its beginning cannot be seen; it will remain after heaven and earth, yet its end cannot be found." This can indeed be seen in the *Diamond Sutra of Prajna Paramita*. Truly, the words of the revered one serve as an eternal guide for all generations.

We, disciples of the Buddha such as Laifu, upon encountering this supreme Mahayana teaching, felt as if we had found light in darkness, treasure in poverty, healing from a long illness, or returned home after a distant journey. Filled with joy and reverence, we wholeheartedly accept and uphold it. Therefore, we gathered with like-minded companions, generously offering our resources to commission the reprinting and distribution of this scripture, spreading it far and wide. May all beings in this age of impurity swiftly board the compassionate vessel of wisdom and quickly reach the shore of enlightenment. We pray for harmony in the seasons, abundant harvests, favorable winds and rains, peace for the nation and its people, and the eternal turning of the Dharma wheel.
