> <note>Gengyin year</note> Master Huiyuan founded the White Lotus Society

> As the Jin dynasty declined, many extraordinary people and those who had transcended worldly concerns chose to live in seclusion rather than serve as officials. They came to seek refuge with Huiyuan. Huiyuan said, "If you all have the aspiration to journey to the Pure Land, you should redouble your efforts." So he led everyone to form the White Lotus Society, wholeheartedly practicing Buddha Recitation, aspiring to be reborn in the Pure Land. He asked Liu Chengzhi to write a "Vow Text," and Wang Qiaozhi and others composed poems on the Buddha Recitation Samādhi to express their resolve. Huiyuan wrote in the preface: "What is the Buddha Recitation Samādhi? It means focused thought and stilled reflection. When thought is focused, the will is unified and unshaken. When reflection is stilled, the vital energy becomes empty and the spirit becomes luminous. When energy is empty, wisdom rests calmly in its illumination. When spirit is luminous, there is nothing hidden that is not penetrated. These two are naturally profound tokens that unite as one to serve their function. Therefore, one sits respectfully at ease in a quiet dwelling and responds to things, connecting with the numinous and mastering the mind. Only through correctness does one move into the subtle. Even relying on practice to concentrate the spirit and accumulating habit to transform one's nature can still bring about such results—how much more so for one who dwells in stillness like a corpse, sits in forgetfulness, and silently embraces the ultimate, with wisdom extending throughout the universe while treading unknowingly in the Great Direction! "Let me speak of its beginning. When a bodhisattva first enters the stage of the path and has just glimpsed the mysterious gate, they realize stillness and non-doing, yet there is nothing they do not do. When their spiritual transformations occur, they can make the long short and the constant change, make the great and small mutually invert, turn back the light of the sun, moon, and stars to shift their illumination, and roll up heaven and earth into their embrace. "Furthermore, there are many kinds of samādhi, with countless names. Among those of high merit and easy progress, Buddha Recitation comes first. Penetrating the mysterious and exhausting the subtle, the honored name is Tathāgata. The spiritual body adapts and transforms, responding without fixed direction. Therefore, one who enters this samādhi is dimly unaware, forgetful of knowing, and takes whatever is at hand as a mirror. When the mirror is bright, inner illumination reflects back and forth, and forms and images arise. Though beyond the reach of ears and eyes, hearing and seeing proceed through it. Then one beholds the deeply settled, empty-mirror body, and awakens to the spiritual mark—profoundly unified, clear and bright. Naturally one perceives the striking of mysterious sound. When the mind listens, defilements and burdens dissolve, and stagnant feelings melt into clarity. Were it not for the utmost subtlety under heaven, what could compare to this? "Viewed in this way, a single encounter's impression can unfold deeply buried habits accumulated over long ages and open up the heavy delusion of benighted habit. As for what ordinary people encounter in various samādhis, they cannot compare in superiority or inferiority—this much is clear. "Therefore, I exhort all worthy ones to all reflect on this single principle and its profound resonance. Sensing how the fleeting moments of time decline like a sinking sun, and fearing that future provisions have not yet been accumulated, they wash their hearts in the Dharma hall, straighten their robes, and face purely toward the Pure Land. In the depths of night they forget sleep, and from dawn to dusk they exert themselves. May their sincere and devoted efforts fulfill the aspiration for the Three Vehicles. Standing at the ford to ferry beings across, they go forward together with the nine streams. Looking up, they support those who leap ahead and pull them beyond; looking down, they guide those who advance with restraint, holding the whip behind them. In perusing the brushwork displayed in all these compositions, how could it be merely literary recitation? Śramaṇa Huiwei lived in the mountains practicing meditation. Mountain spirits appeared in various forms, but all were transformed by Huiwei's guidance and disappeared. Once there was a great snowfall, and a woman of delicate and charming appearance, dressed in bright and beautiful clothes, came to say to Huiwei, "Venerable one, you have virtue. Heaven has sent me to comfort and encourage you." She then spoke all sorts of words of desire. With his mind unmoved, Huiwei said to the woman, "My mind is like dead ashes. Do not test me with this bag of skin." The woman then rose into the clouds and departed, looking back with a sigh: "The ocean's waters may dry up, Mount Sumeru may topple, but that venerable one holds his resolve firm and steadfast."
