### 乙未智覬大師隱天台山

> Master Zhiyi Secluded on Mount Tiantai

智覬。居金陵瓦官八年。陳太建七年九月。謝遣徒眾。隱天台山。時佛隴峰有定光大師。謂弟子曰。不久當有勝善知識。領徒至此。俄而覬至。光曰。還憶疇昔。舉手招引時否。乃共至菴所。其夜聞空中鐘聲聲曰。是何祥也。曰此是揵槌集僧。得住之相。此峰金地。我已居之。北峰銀地。汝當居焉。覬甞獨往華領峰坐禪。忽於後夜。大風拔木。迅雷震山。魑魅千群。一形百狀。倐忽轉變。不可稱計。又作父母師僧之形。乍枕乍抱。悲硬流涕。覬安心空寂。深念實相。強輭二緣。所不能動。明星出時。神僧讚曰。制敵勝怨。乃可為勇。能過斯難。無如汝者。既安慰已。復為說法。覬曰。大聖是何法門。當云何學。云何弘宣。答曰。此名一實諦。學之以般若。宣之以大悲。從今已後。自行兼人。吾皆影響。

> Zhiyi resided in Jinling's Waguan Temple for eight years. In the ninth month of the seventh year of the Chen dynasty's Taijian era, he dismissed his followers and retreated to Mount Tiantai. At that time, on Foglong Peak, there was the Great Master Dingguang, who said to his disciples, "Before long, an eminent teacher of great virtue will arrive, leading his students here." Shortly after, Zhiyi appeared. Guang said, "Do you remember the time long ago when I raised my hand to beckon you?" Then they went together to the hermitage. That night, they heard the sound of a bell in the sky. Zhiyi asked, "What is this auspicious sign?" Guang replied, "This is the sounding of the wooden fish to gather the monks—a sign that this place is suitable for dwelling. This peak is the golden land, which I already occupy. The northern peak is the silver land, where you should reside." Zhiyi once went alone to Hualing Peak to practice seated meditation. Suddenly, in the middle of the night, a great wind uprooted trees, thunder shook the mountain, and swarms of goblins appeared in a thousand shapes—constantly transforming in countless ways. They also took the forms of his parents, teachers, and monks, sometimes leaning on him, sometimes embracing him, weeping and wailing bitterly. Zhiyi remained at peace in emptiness and stillness, deeply contemplating ultimate reality. Neither the forceful nor the gentle influences could move him. When the morning star rose, a divine monk praised him, saying, "To conquer enemies and overcome resentment—this indeed is courage. None can surpass you in passing through such trials." After offering this reassurance, the divine monk then expounded the Dharma to him. Zhiyi asked, "Great Sage, what Dharma gate is this? How should I study it and how should I proclaim it?" The divine monk replied, "This is called the truth of ultimate reality. Study it through wisdom, and proclaim it through great compassion. From now on, for your own practice and for guiding others, I will always be your unseen support."
