> Yuanmiao had suffered from stomach illness for several years. In the eleventh month of the year Yìwèi, Dayong from Dajue Temple and Mingchu, the abbot of the Shizi Hermitage, came to visit him. Yuanmiao entrusted them with his final affairs. At dawn on the first day of the twelfth month, he took leave of the assembly, saying, "For thirty years at West Peak, I have spoke loosely of prajna—a crime that reaches heaven. But there is one final phrase I will not burden others with; I will take it with myself. Is there anyone here who knows where it lands?" After a long pause, he said, "A hair's breadth of deviation, and heaven and earth are set apart." He then spoke a verse: "Coming, I did not enter the death barrier; Going, I do not leave the death barrier. The iron snake drills into the sea, Toppling Mount Sumeru." With that, he passed away in stillness. When the coffin was opened seven days later, his body remained upright and appeared as if alive. His full relics were enshrined in the Death Barrier. Yuanmiao was deeply compassionate and diligent in guiding others. He spoke kindly and gently, sometimes even weeping as he taught. When he entered the meditation hall and wielded the ancestral command, he drove and tested his students with thorough scrutiny, granting no leniency, not even for a grain of rice. He once admonished practitioners, saying, "People today rely on a fragment of knowledge or half an understanding, yet cannot see through to the end. When a student questions them, they are at a loss and cannot distinguish right from wrong. They toss words back and forth like children play-fighting—this is because their realization has been too crude. Truly, one must penetrate deeply, see personally, and verify firsthand. Only by understanding the wisdom of discrimination can one judge and determine what to strike down and what to uphold." His methods were sharp and perilous, impossible to grasp easily. He was especially careful in observing precepts and honoring discipline. Even though he founded two monasteries, he never once laid eyes on them. A devout layman named Quán Cóngjìn received a lock of his hair, which he enshrined and honored day and night. The relics he left behind, strung like pearls, were abundant. Whether people knew him personally or not, all praised him, saying, "Gaofeng, an ancient Buddha."
