第五祖提多迦者。摩伽陀國人也。初生之時父夢金日自屋而出照耀天地。前有大山諸寶嚴飾。山頂泉涌滂沱四流。後遇毱多尊者。為解之曰。寶山者吾身也。泉涌者法無盡也。日從屋出者汝今入道之相也。照耀天地者汝智慧超越也。尊者本名香眾。師因易今名焉。梵云提多迦。此云通真量也。多迦聞師說已歡喜踊躍。而唱偈言。

> The Fifth Patriarch, \*Tidoka\*, was born in the land of Magadha. At the time of his birth, his father dreamed of a golden sun rising from within the house, radiating light that illuminated the heavens and the earth. Before it stood a great mountain, adorned with all kinds of precious jewels, and from its peak a spring gushed forth, its waters flowing abundantly in four directions. Later, \*Tidoka\* met the Venerable Upagupta, who explained the dream: “The jeweled mountain represents my body. The gushing spring represents the inexhaustible flow of the Dharma. The sun rising from the house signifies that you have now entered the path. And the light illuminating the heavens and earth symbolizes the surpassing power of your wisdom.” The Venerable’s original name was “Fragrant Multitude,” but his teacher changed it to its current form. In Sanskrit, \*Tidoka\* means “Penetrating the True Measure.” Upon hearing his teacher’s words, \*Tidoka\* leapt with joy and recited this verse:

巍巍七寶山 常出智慧泉迴為真法味 能度諸有緣

> The majestic mountain of seven treasures Forever flows with the spring of wisdom. It turns into the true flavor of Dharma, Able to deliver those who are connected by fate.

毱多尊者亦說偈曰。

> Venerable Gudda also recited a verse:

我法傳於汝 當現大智慧金日從屋出 照耀於天地

> The Dharma I entrust to you — You shall manifest great wisdom. It shall be like the golden sun emerging from its house, Illuminating both heaven and earth.

提多迦聞師妙偈設禮奉持。後至中印度。彼國有八千大仙。彌遮迦為首。聞尊者至率眾瞻禮。謂尊者曰。昔與師同生梵天。我遇阿私陀僊人授我僊法。師逢十力弟子修習禪那。自此報分殊塗已經六劫。尊者曰。支離累劫誠哉不虛。今可捨邪歸正以入佛乘。彌遮迦曰。昔阿私陀僊人授我記云。汝却後六劫。當遇同學獲無漏果。今也相遇非宿緣邪。願師慈悲令我解脫。尊者即度出家命聖授戒餘僊眾始生我慢。尊者示大神通。於是俱發菩提心一時出家。乃告彌遮迦曰。昔如來以大法眼藏密付迦葉。展轉相授而至於我。我今付汝當護念之。乃說偈曰。

> Titaka heard his teacher's wonderful verse, prostrated himself in reverence, and received it with devotion. Later, he journeyed to central India, where there were eight thousand great immortals with Micaka at their head. Hearing of the reverend one's arrival, Micaka led the group to pay homage and said: "In a former life, I was born in the Brahma Heaven together with you, teacher. I received the practice of immortality from the sage Asita, while you became a disciple of the Ten-Powered One, cultivating meditation. Since then, our paths have diverged for six kalpas." The reverend one replied: "After countless kalpas of wandering, this is truly not false. Now you should abandon what is wrong and turn to the truth, entering the vehicle of the Buddha." Micaka said: "In the past, the sage Asita gave me a prophecy, saying: 'After six kalpas, you will meet a fellow student and attain the fruit of liberation.' Now we have met—is this not our karmic connection from the past? I pray that the teacher, in compassion, will grant me liberation." The reverend one then accepted him as a disciple, commanded the assembly to confer the precepts, and the remaining immortals began to give rise to arrogance. The reverend one displayed his great spiritual powers, whereupon all of them awakened the bodhi mind and became monks at the same time. He then said to Micaka: "In the past, the Tathagata secretly entrusted the great Dharma-eye treasury to Kashyapa, who transmitted it successively until it reached me. I now entrust it to you—you must protect and uphold it." He then spoke this verse:

通達本法心 無法無非法悟了同未悟 無心亦無法

說偈已。踊身虛空作十八變火光三昧自焚其軀。彌遮迦與八千比丘同收舍利。於班茶山中起塔供養。即莊王七年己丑歲也當作五年。
