> The Sixth Patriarch, Miccaka, was a native of Central India. After he had transmitted the Dharma, he traveled and taught, eventually reaching Northern India. There, he saw a golden auspicious cloud hovering above a city's battlements and sighed, saying, "This is the energy of a spiritual practitioner. There must be a great being here who will become my Dharma heir." He then entered the city. In the marketplace, a man approached him, holding a wine vessel, and asked, "Master, where have you come from, and where do you wish to go?" The master replied, "I come from my own mind and wish to go nowhere." The man asked, "Do you recognize what I hold in my hand?" The master said, "This is a vessel of touch that bears impurity." The man asked, "Master, do you recognize me?" The master replied, "If I recognize you, then I am not myself." The master then said, "Try telling me your name and family. Later, I will reveal your original cause." The man spoke a verse in reply: "From countless eons past, Until my birth in this land, My family name is Bharadvaja, My given name is Vasumitra." The master said, "My teacher, Tejodhikara, once said that when the World-Honored One traveled through Northern India, He told Ananda, 'In this country, three hundred years after my passing, a sage will appear. His family name will be Bharadvaja, and his given name will be Vasumitra. He will become the Seventh Patriarch of the Zen lineage.' The World-Honored One predicted you. You should now renounce the household life." The man then set down his vessel, bowed to the master, and stood to the side, saying, "I recall that in a past eon, I once acted as a patron and offered a jeweled seat to a Tathagata. That Buddha then predicted to me, 'In the future, during the Dharma era of Shakyamuni, you will propagate the highest teachings.' Now your words fulfill that prophecy. I pray you accept me and liberate me." The master then shaved his head and fully initiated him into the monastic vows before telling him, "The Treasury of the True Dharma Eye is now entrusted to you. Do not let it be cut off." He then spoke a verse: "Where the mind-ground is born of no conditions, All things that arise are intangible. Once you realize this empty essence, Full enlightenment shines from every direction."

> No-mind cannot be attained; To speak of it is not the Dharma. If you realize the mind is not-mind, Only then do you understand the Dharma of mind.

> After the Master had spoken this verse, he entered the Lion's Sports Samadhi, soared into the sky to the height of seven palmyra trees, then returned to his seat and, emitting a fire from within, cremated his own body. Vasumitra collected his sacred relics, placed them in a casket of seven jewels, and built a stupa, positioning the casket at the uppermost level. This occurred in the year jiashen, the fifteenth year of King Xiang's reign (a note: it should say the fifteenth year).
