> The Seventh Patriarch, Vasumitra, was from Northern India. He was of the Bharadvaja clan. He always wore clean robes, carried a wine vessel, and wandered through villages and towns. Sometimes he would chant, sometimes he would whistle, and people considered him mad. When he met the venerable Mishaka, who proclaimed the Buddha's past prediction, he recognized his own previous connection and abandoned his wine vessel to become a monk. After receiving the Dharma, he traveled to spread it, arriving in the land of Karmarāja, where he greatly advanced the Buddhist teachings. Suddenly, before his seat, a wise man appeared, proclaiming himself as "Buddhanandin." He said, "Now I will debate with you, Master." The Master replied, "Virtuous one, if you debate, then it is not true meaning. True meaning does not require debate. If you try to debate meaning, the end result is not meaningful discussion." Buddhanandin knew the Master's insight was superior and was deeply impressed and convinced. He said, "I aspire to attain the path and taste the sweet dew of Dharma." The venerable one then shaved his head and granted him full monastic ordination. He then told him, "The Buddha's true Dharma eye, the treasury of enlightenment, I now entrust to you. You must sustain and protect it." He then spoke a verse: I have inherited the Dharma's true essence, And now entrust it to you, the successor. Enlightened nature has no coming or going; When the conditions are fulfilled, following one's own heart is the teacher.

> The mind is like the realm of space, Teaching the Dharma equal to space. When one realizes the state of space, There is no "is" and no "is not."

> The Venerable One entered the samadhi of loving-kindness. At that moment, Brahma, Indra, and all the heavenly beings came to pay homage, reciting this verse:

> Sages of the Virtuous Kalpa, the seventh one is you, O Venerable One. With compassion, you think of me—please teach me the ground of Buddhahood.

> The Venerable emerged from samadhi and addressed the assembly, saying: "The Dharma I have attained is not something that exists. Therefore, you should understand the Buddha’s realm by transcending the concepts of existence and non-existence." After speaking these words, he re-entered samadhi and manifested the appearance of nirvana. Nanti then erected a seven-jeweled stupa on the spot of his seat to enshrine his entire body. This occurred in the 19th year of King Ding's reign, the year xinwei <note>Should be the 17th year</note>.
