> The eighth patriarch, the Buddha Nandimitra, was from the country of Kāmārupa. His family name was Gautama. He had a fleshy protuberance on his head and was eloquent and quick-witted without hindrance. He first met the venerable Vasumitra, left home, and received teachings. Later, while leading disciples in their travels to teach, he arrived at the house of Viśāla in the city of Tīkṣṇa. Seeing a white light rising above the house, he said to his followers, "This house must have a sage within. Though silent and speechless, they are truly a vessel of the Great Vehicle. They do not walk on the four thoroughfares, as they know that touching filth is defiling." After he spoke, the elder came out to salute him and asked what he needed. The venerable one said, "I seek an attendant." The elder replied, "I have a son named \*Buddhamitra\*. He is now fifty years old, but his mouth has never spoken and his feet have never walked." The venerable one said, "As you say, he is truly my disciple." When the venerable one saw him, he immediately rose and bowed, and then spoke this gatha:

> Parents are not truly kin to me — Who, then, is my truest kin? Buddhas are not my path — What, then, is the highest path?

> The Venerable replied with a verse:

> You say the mind is near and dear, No parent can compare. You walk in harmony with the Way, The Buddha's mind is here. Seeking a Buddha with form outside, You will not find what's true inside. To know your mind's Original Nature, It's neither joined nor set aside.

> Fudamitra heard his teacher's wondrous verse and walked seven steps. His teacher said, "This child once encountered a Buddha in the past and made a vast compassionate vow. Worried that his parents' love would make it hard for them to let go, he neither spoke nor walked." The elder then allowed him to leave home and become a monk. The venerable master soon gave him full ordination and told him, "I now entrust you with the Tathagata's true Dharma-eye treasury—do not let it be cut off." He then spoke a verse:

> Emptiness has no inside or outside, And so too the nature of mind. If you truly understand emptiness, You have realized the ultimate truth.

> Fudamita, receiving his teacher's instruction, praised him with a verse.

> Our master, the Chan patriarch, Is rightly considered the eighth. His Dharma-teaching transformed countless beings, All of whom attained Arhatship.

> At that time, the Venerable Buddhanandi manifested a spiritual transformation, then returned to his seat and entered a state of serene stillness and complete cessation. The assembly erected a jeweled stupa to enshrine his entire body. This happened in the twelfth year of King Jing’s reign (the year Bingyin)—which should actually be the tenth year.
