第十祖脇尊者。中印度人也。本名難生。初尊者將誕。父夢一白象背有寶坐坐上安一明珠。從門而入光照四眾。既覺遂生。後值伏馱尊者。執侍左右未嘗睡眠。謂其脇不至席。遂號脇尊者焉。初至華氏國憩一樹下。右手指地而告眾曰。此地變金色當有聖人入會。言訖即變金色。時有長者子富那夜奢。合掌前立。尊者問。汝從何來。夜奢曰。我心非往。尊者曰。汝何處住。曰我心非止。尊者曰。汝不定耶。曰諸佛亦然。尊者曰。汝非諸佛。曰諸佛亦非尊者。因說偈曰。

> The Tenth Patriarch, Elder Side. He was from Central India. His original name was Difficult Birth. When the patriarch was about to be born, his father dreamed of a white elephant carrying a jeweled throne on its back, upon which rested a bright pearl. It entered through the gate, its light illuminating the entire assembly. Upon waking, the child was born. Later, he met Patriarch Futuo and served by his side, never sleeping. It was said that his side never touched the mat, hence he was called Elder Side. When he first arrived in the country of Huashi, he rested under a tree. Pointing to the ground with his right hand, he addressed the assembly, saying, "When this ground turns golden, a sage will enter this gathering." As soon as he finished speaking, the ground turned golden. At that moment, a wealthy man's son, Funaye She, stepped forward, palms together. The patriarch asked, "Where have you come from?" Ye She said, "My mind does not go." The patriarch asked, "Where do you abide?" He said, "My mind does not abide." The patriarch asked, "Are you not settled?" He said, "So it is with all Buddhas." The patriarch said, "You are not the Buddhas." He said, "The Buddhas are not the patriarch either." Then he spoke a verse:

此地變金色 預知於聖至當坐菩提樹 覺華而成已

> This land turns to golden light, Foretelling the arrival of the Sage. He shall sit beneath the Bodhi tree, And the flower of Enlightenment shall fully bloom.

夜奢復說偈曰。

> Yashe then spoke in verse, saying:

師坐金色地 常說真實義迴光而照我 令入三摩諦

> The Master sits upon the golden ground, Always teaching the true and genuine meaning. His radiance turns and shines upon me, Leading me to enter the state of samadhi.

尊者知其意。即度出家復具戒品。乃告之曰。如來大法眼藏今付於汝。汝護念之。乃說偈言。

> The Venerable One understood his intention. He immediately ordained him and bestowed upon him the full precepts. Then he told him, "The Tathagata's great Dharma-eye treasury I now entrust to you. Guard it well." Then he spoke this verse:

真體自然真 因真說有理領得真真法 無行亦無止

尊者付法已。即現神變而入涅槃。化火自焚。四眾各以衣裓古得切盛舍利。隨處興塔而供養之。即貞王二十二年己亥歲也當作二十七年。
