> The Thirteenth Patriarch, Kapimala, was a native of the Flower Country. Initially a non-Buddhist teacher with three thousand followers and mastery of various heterodox doctrines, he later received the Dharma from the Venerable Ashvaghosha and led his disciples to Western India. There, a crown prince named Cloud Sovereign, who admired the Venerable's reputation, invited him to the palace for offerings. The Venerable said, "The Tathagata taught that monks should not associate closely with kings, ministers, or families of power." The prince responded, "To the north of our city there is a great mountain with a stone cave. Could you practice meditation in stillness there?" The Venerable agreed and entered the mountain. After traveling several miles, he encountered a huge python. The Venerable walked straight ahead without concern, and the serpent coiled around his body. Thereupon, the Venerable gave the snake the Three Refuges, and the python listened and then departed. As the Venerable approached the cave, an old man in white robes came out with palms joined in greeting. The Venerable asked, "Where do you dwell?" The old man replied, "In the past, I was a monk who loved quietude. Several novice monks frequently came to seek instruction, but I grew weary of answering and harbored angry, hateful thoughts. When I died, I fell into rebirth as a python. I have lived in this cave for a thousand years. Just now I encountered you, Venerable, and had the opportunity to hear the precepts, so I came to express my gratitude." The Venerable asked, "Who else dwells in this mountain?" The old man said, "Ten miles north there is a great tree that shades five hundred great dragons. Their king is named Nagarjuna, and he regularly teaches the Dharma to the dragon assembly. I also listen and receive his teachings." The Venerable then led his disciples to that place. Nagarjuna came out to welcome him. The Venerable said, "In this deep mountain solitude, where dragons and pythons dwell, why would you, a great noble one, trouble yourself to come?" The Venerable replied, "I am not a noble one; I have come to visit a worthy sage." Nagarjuna thought silently to himself, "Does this master possess settled nature and clear dharma-eye? Is he a great sage who continues the true lineage?" The Venerable said, "Though you spoke silently in your mind, I already know your thoughts. Just prepare yourself for renunciation — why worry whether I am a sage?" Hearing this, Nagarjuna felt remorse and apologized. The Venerable then conferred liberation upon him, and all five hundred dragons received the full precepts. He further told Nagarjuna, "Now I entrust to you the Tathagata's great Dharma Eye-Treasure.
