> The Twenty-Seventh Patriarch, Prajñātāra, was from Eastern India. After attaining the Dharma, he traveled to Southern India to teach. The king there was named Xiangzhi, who revered the Buddha's teachings, honored and supported the Sangha, surpassing all others in his devotion. He also offered a priceless jewel as an offering. At that time, the king had three sons, the youngest of whom was a bodhisattva. The Venerable One, wishing to test their understanding, took the jewel that had been offered and asked the three princes, "This jewel is perfectly bright and round. Is there anything that can surpass it?" The eldest son, Muchengduoluo, and the second son, Gongdeduoluo, both replied, "This jewel is supreme among the seven treasures; nothing surpasses it. Who but one with the Venerable One's spiritual power could receive such an offering?" The third son, Bodhidharma, said, "This is a worldly treasure, not the highest. Among all treasures, the Dharma treasure is supreme. This is a worldly light, not the highest. Among all lights, the light of wisdom is supreme. This is a worldly brightness, not the highest. Among all brightnesses, the brightness of the mind is supreme. The radiance of this jewel cannot illuminate itself; it depends on the light of wisdom to discern it. Once it is discerned, one knows it is a jewel. Once it is known as a jewel, its treasure is understood. If the treasure is understood, the treasure does not treasure itself. If the jewel is discerned, the jewel does not jewel itself. The jewel not jewel-ing itself means it depends on the jewel of wisdom to discern the worldly jewel. The treasure not treasuring itself means it depends on the treasure of wisdom to illuminate the Dharma treasure. Thus, when the master possesses the Way, the treasure appears. When sentient beings possess the Dharma-mind, their mind-treasure is likewise." The Venerable One, admiring his discernment and wisdom, asked further, "Among all things, what is without characteristics?" He replied, "Among all things, non-arising is without characteristics." He asked again, "Among all things, what is highest?" He replied, "Among all things, the self is highest." He asked once more, "Among all things, what is greatest?" He replied, "Among all things, the Dharma-nature is greatest." The Venerable One, knowing he was a Dharma heir, saw that the time was not yet ripe and remained silent, blending in. When King Xiangzhi passed away, everyone wailed in despair. Only the third son, Bodhidharma, entered meditation before the coffin. After seven days, he emerged and requested to leave the household life. After receiving full ordination, the Venerable One instructed him, saying, "The Tathāgata entrusted the True Dharma Eye to Mahākāśyapa. Thus it was passed down through the generations until it reached me. I now entrust it to you. Listen to my verse:"

> From the mind's ground, all seeds arise, Through circumstances, principles unfold. When fruits of virtue reach their peak, enlightenment is complete, As blossoms open, worlds come into being.

> After the Venerable One transmitted the Dharma, he immediately stood up from his seat. Extending both hands, he emitted light from each—twenty-seven rays of five-colored radiance. Then he leapt into the sky, rising as high as seven palm trees, transformed into flames, and burned himself in midair. Relics fell like rain from the sky, which were collected and used to build a stupa. This occurred in the first year of the Daming era of Emperor Xiaowu of the Song dynasty, the dingyou year.<note>The Orthodox Record states it was during the reign of Emperor Xiaowu of the Song. An annotation adds that, calculating from the sixty-seven years of Bodhidharma, it should correspond to the first year of the Jianyuan era of Emperor Xiaowu of the Song, the jiawu year.</note>
