洪州泐潭法會禪師問馬祖。如何是西來祖師意。祖曰。低聲近前來。師便近前。祖打一摑云。六耳不同謀。來日來。師至來日猶入法堂云。請和尚道。祖云。且去。待老漢上堂時出來。與汝證明。師乃悟云。謝大眾證明。乃繞法堂一匝便去。

> Master Fahui of Hongzhou Letan asked Mazu, "What is the meaning of the Patriarch's coming from the West?" Mazu said, "Lower your voice and come closer." The master approached, and Mazu slapped him, saying, "Six ears cannot plan together. Come again tomorrow." The next day, the master entered the Dharma hall and said, "Please, Master, speak." Mazu said, "Go for now. When the old man ascends the hall, come out, and I will confirm it for you." The master then awakened and said, "I thank the assembly for confirming this." He then circumambulated the Dharma hall once and left.
