> Second Generation Dharma Heir of Chan Master Huairang

> Master Wu Ye of Fenzhou was from Shangluo, Shangzhou, with the surname Du. His mother, Lady Li, once heard a voice in the sky asking, "May I stay here?" and then knew she was pregnant. On the night of his birth, divine light filled the room. Even as a child, he always walked with his eyes straight ahead and sat in full lotus posture. At age nine, he studied Mahayana scriptures under Master Zhi Ben at Kaiyuan Temple, reading five lines at once and reciting them without omission. At twelve, he shaved his head, and at twenty, he received full precepts from Master You of Xiangzhou, studying the Four Part Vinaya commentary. He could expound it as soon as he finished studying it. He taught the great Nirvana Sutra to the assembly, never stopping through winter or summer. Later, he heard that Master Ma was flourishing in the Chan tradition and went specially to pay respects. When Patriarch Ma saw his imposing appearance and bell-like voice, he said, "The magnificent Buddha hall, yet no Buddha inside it." The Master knelt and asked, "I have roughly grasped the meaning of the Three Vehicles, but I often hear that in Chan, the mind itself is Buddha—this I truly cannot understand." Patriarch Ma said, "This very mind that cannot understand—that's it. There's nothing else." The Master asked again, "What is the mind seal secretly transmitted by the Patriarch from the West?" The Patriarch said, "Venerable, you're in the midst of noise now. Go away and come back another time." As the Master was just leaving, the Patriarch called out, "Venerable!" The Master turned around. The Patriarch said, "What is it?" The Master was immediately enlightened and bowed. The Patriarch said, "Why bow, you dull fellow?" After attaining the teaching, he went to Caoqi to pay respects at the Patriarch's stupa, then to Lushan and Tiantai, searching for holy traces everywhere. From Luo to Yong, he rested at Ximing Temple, where the monks elected him as a great virtuous one of both streets. The Master said, "This is not my original aspiration." Later he went to Shangdang, where Military Governor Li Baozhen greatly revered his virtue and attended to him day and night. The Master often showed weariness and told people, "I originally came to avoid the bustle of the capital, but now I have to deal with you gentlemen—how could this be my wish?" He then went to Baofu Mountain in Xianshang. Before long, he moved to Qingliang Jin'ge Temple, where he spent eight years reviewing the entire canon. He then went south to Xihe, where Governor Dong Shuchan invited him to stay at Kaiyuan Monastery. The Master said, "My affinity is here." From then on, he rained the great Dharma rain for nearly twenty years. Both monastics and laypeople in Bing and Fen were converted. Whenever students asked questions, the Master would often reply, "Don't have deluded thoughts." Emperor Xianzong repeatedly sent envoys to summon him, but the Master declined citing illness. When Emperor Muzong ascended the throne, wishing to pay him a visit, he ordered the monastic registrar Lingfu and others to bring the imperial edict to invite him. When they arrived and bowed, they said, "This imperial grace is different from before—we hope the Venerable will comply with the heavenly will and not claim illness." The Master smiled and said, "What virtue do I have to trouble the worldly ruler repeatedly? Please go ahead—I shall follow from another path." He then bathed and shaved his head. At midnight, he told his disciples Hui Yin and others, "Your nature of seeing, hearing, awareness, and knowing shares the same lifespan as space—it is unborn and undying. All realms are originally empty and still; not a single dharma can be obtained. The deluded cannot understand and are confused by realms. Once confused by realms, they wander endlessly. You should know that the mind-nature is originally present, not created by effort, like vajra that cannot be destroyed. All dharmas are like shadows and echoes, without reality. Thus the sutra says, 'There is only the one reality; the other two are not true.' Constantly understanding that everything is empty, with nothing to attach to—this is where all Buddhas apply their minds. Practice diligently." After speaking, he sat in full lotus and passed away. On the day of cremation, five-colored auspicious clouds appeared and strange fragrance spread everywhere. The relics obtained shone like jade pearls. Disciples placed them in a golden casket. Buried in a stone stupa on the twenty-first day of the twelfth month of Changqing's third year. He lived sixty-two years with forty-two rainy seasons. He was posthumously honored as Great Master Dada, with his stupa named Chengyuan.
