> Master Ruzhi of Jizhou Zifu Monastery. A monk asked, "What is the phrase that responds to circumstances?" The master remained silent. Another asked, "What is the profound mystery?" The master said, "Close the door for me." A monk asked, "What about Luzu facing the wall?" The master said, "No connection." Another asked, "What is the true eye passed down from above?" The master beat his chest and said, "Heavens! Heavens!" The monk said, "What harm is there in asking?" The master said, "Tired." A monk asked, "Does this still require study or not?" The master said, "Never have I dug the ground to plant emptiness." A monk asked, "What is the urgent point for a monk?" The master said, "It does not go beyond this question." The monk said, "Before I even asked, please speak, Master." The master said, "Alas." A monk asked, "All directions are full of wondrous functions—what about here, Master?" The master said, "Alas." A monk asked, "The ancients raised the hammer and held up the whisk—what is the meaning of this?" The master said, "Mute." A monk asked, "What is the single gate to nirvana?" The master snapped his fingers once, then spread open both hands. The monk said, "How should this be understood?" The master said, "It is not the bright autumn moon—you cross the river sideways on your own, eight or nine spans." A monk asked, "What is the Master's family style?" The master said, "Three bowls of tea after meals." One day the master picked up a sitting cushion and showed it to the assembly, saying, "All Buddhas, bodhisattvas, and sages who have entered the principle come forth from here." He then threw it down, tore open his chest, and said, "What about this?" The assembly had no response. A monk said, "I have just entered the monastery, and summer retreat is nearly over—I have not yet received any instruction from the Master. I beg you to lift me up." The master pushed the monk away and said, "I have been abbot here all along, and I have never blinded a single monk's eye." At times the master would sit for a long while, then look around left and right and say, "Do you understand?" The assembly said, "No." The master said, "If you don't understand, then I have been fooling you all along." One day the master put the sitting cushion on his head and said, "When you are like this, it is hard to talk with you." The assembly had no response. The master then sat down and said, "Still a bit better."
