蘄州三角山令珪禪師初參清平。清平問曰。來作麼。師曰。來禮拜。曰禮拜阿誰。師曰。特來禮拜和尚。清平咄曰。遮鈍根阿師。師乃禮拜。清平於師頸上以手斫一下。師從此摳衣密領宗旨。住後僧問。如何是佛。師曰。明日來向汝道。如今道不得。

> Zen Master Linggui of Sanjiao Mountain in Qizhou first came to study under Master Qingping. Qingping asked him, "Why have you come?" Linggui replied, "I have come to pay my respects." Qingping asked, "To whom do you pay respects?" Linggui said, "I have come specifically to pay respects to you, Master." Qingping scolded him, saying, "You dull-minded fellow!" Linggui then bowed in homage. Qingping struck Linggui on the neck with his hand. From then on, Linggui diligently studied and secretly grasped the essential teachings. Later, after becoming a teacher himself, a monk asked him, "What is Buddha?" Linggui replied, "Come back tomorrow and I will tell you. I cannot tell you right now."
