> Master Yuelun of Huangshan Temple in Fuzhou was a native of Futang, Fujian, with the secular surname Xu. In his youth, he went to Huangbo Temple in his home prefecture and became a disciple of Chan Master Guan. After completing his training and receiving the full precepts, he traveled to Tushui and called on Zen Master Sanfeng. Though their exchange followed proper form, their minds did not resonate. Later, hearing of Master Jiashan's flourishing teaching, he went to seek him out. Jiashan asked, "What is your name?" He replied, "Yuelun (Moon Wheel)." Jiashan drew a circle in the air and said, "How does this compare to your name?" Yuelun said, "Master, if you speak this way, many people in various quarters would not agree." Jiashan said, "I speak this way—what about you?" Yuelun replied, "Do you see the moon wheel?" Jiashan said, "If you speak this way, many people here would not agree with you either." Yuelun then submitted in reverence and continued his inquiry. One day, Jiashan asked in a loud voice, "Where are you from?" Yuelun said, "From Fujian." Jiashan asked, "Do you know this old monk?" Yuelun replied, "Does the master know this student?" Jiashan said, "Not quite. First return my straw sandal money, then I'll return your Jiangling rice money." Yuelun said, "In that case, I don't know the master. But what is the price of Jiangling rice?" Jiashan said, "You certainly know how to roar." He then admitted Yuelun into his room and gave him the seal of realization. Yuelun stayed with him for seven years before taking his leave. He went to Fuzhou and settled at Longji Mountain in seclusion. Seekers gathered like clouds, and he expounded the profound teachings of Jiashan, gaining wide renown. Later he returned to Linchuan and gladly took up residence at Huangshan. He told his disciples, "Living on this mountain fulfills my long-cherished wish." One day, addressing the assembly, he said: "The Patriarch came from the West solely to proclaim this matter. Yet people fail to realize it and seek outside themselves—diving into red waters to find pearls, going to Jing Mountain to search for jade. Thus it is said: What enters through the gate is not the family treasure. To mistake the reflection for the head—isn't that a great error?" A monk asked, "What is the Patriarch's meaning?" The master said, "Liang hall did not display effort; Wei land ceased all traces of mind." A monk asked, "What is the Way?" The master said, "The stone ox repeatedly breathes spring mist; the wooden horse's neigh fills the road." A monk asked, "How can one see one's original face?" The master said, "No need to hang a stone mirror—at dawn, the rooster naturally crows." A monk asked, "Please, Master, speak a word on the essential teaching." The master said, "The yellow peak stands alone, surpassing all; months come and go, cool and brisk." A monk asked, "When one cannot distinguish words mid-speech, how should one be guided?" The master said, "The sword has gone far—you are only now carving a mark on the boat." A monk asked, "What is the matter beneath the robe?" The master said, "The stone ox lies on the water, at ease east and west." A monk asked, "What is the present mind at this moment?" The master said, "The autumn wind has its melody; the crescent moon has no fixed place." A monk asked, "What is the place where a student applies the mind?" The master said, "The door of awakening is not shut—don't be confused before the moon." A monk asked, "What is the road to the blue sky?" The master said, "The crane perches in a tree beyond the clouds, untired by harsh frost and wind." A monk asked, "What about past matters?" The master said, "When the dragon calls in the clear pool, the waves naturally subside." The master resided at Huangshan for thirteen years. Students who came never left without benefit. In the third year of the Later Tang Tongguang era, on the twenty-first day of the twelfth month, he showed a slight illness. By noon on the twenty-sixth day, he passed away sitting upright. He was seventy-two years old, with fifty-three rainy seasons in the monastic life. In the following year, on the twentieth day of the first month, his stupa was erected in the northwest corner of the monastery grounds.
