福州東禪院可隆了空大師。初開堂有僧問。遠棄九峯丈室來坐東禪道場。人天瞻仰於尊顏。願賜一言而演說。師曰。堯風千載了空不昧於闍梨。曰恁麼即人天有賴。師曰。當不當。問如何是道。師曰。正是道。曰如何是道中人。師曰。分明向汝道。師上堂曰。大好省要自不仙陀若是聽響之流。不如歸堂向火。珍重。問如何是普賢第一句。師曰。落第二句也。

> Master Kelong of Dongchan Temple in Fuzhou, also known as Liaokong, held his first formal teaching session. A monk asked, "Having far left the abbot's quarters at Jiufeng, you now sit in the Dharma seat of Dongchan Temple. Humans and devas look up to your venerable countenance. I beg you to grant us a single phrase of teaching." The Master said, "The imperial virtue of Yao has lasted a thousand years, and Liaokong does not deceive you, venerable sir." The monk said, "If that is so, then humans and devas have someone to rely upon." The Master said, "Is that appropriate or not?" Another asked, "What is the Way?" The Master said, "This is precisely the Way." The monk asked, "What is the person in the Way?" The Master said, "I have told you clearly." The Master addressed the assembly, saying, "It would be excellent to keep things simple, but if you are not naturally agile, and you are the kind who listens to echoes, better to return to the hall and warm yourself by the fire. Take care." Another asked, "What is the first phrase of Samantabhadra?" The Master said, "That falls into the second phrase."
