處州涌泉究和尚。師上堂良久曰。還有虎狼禪客麼。有則放出一箇來。時有僧才出。師曰。還知喪命處麼。曰學人咨和尚。師曰。什麼處去也。問獅子未出窟時如何。師曰。抖㖃地。曰獅子出窟後如何。師曰。蓋天蓋地。曰欲出不出時如何。師曰。一切人辨不得。問向去事如何。師曰。俊鷂亦迷蹤。

> Master Jiu of Yongquan in Chuzhou ascended the hall. After a long silence, he said, "Are there any tiger-or-wolf Chan practitioners here? If so, let one come forward." A monk then stepped out. The Master said, "Do you know where you'd lose your life?" The monk replied, "I beseech the Master for guidance." The Master said, "Where has it gone?" The monk asked, "What is it like when a lion has not yet left its den?" The Master said, "It trembles and quakes." The monk asked, "What is it like after the lion leaves its den?" The Master said, "It covers heaven and covers earth." The monk asked, "What about when it is about to leave but hasn't yet?" The Master said, "No one can discern it." The monk asked, "What about future matters?" The Master said, "Even a swift falcon loses its track."
