> Master Xuan Sha, the Great Teacher and Zen Master Yibei, addressed the assembly: "The sun wheel in the vast sky is the foundation on which all beings establish their vision of the void. How do you all perceive it? Your eyes are full but see it not; your ears are full but hear it not. If you fail to awaken to these two places, you are but sleepwalkers. If you penetrate them clearly, you will transcend both ordinary and sacred, transcend the dream-like body and mind of the Three Realms. There will not be a single thing, even as small as a needle's point, to cling to or oppose. Even if all Buddhas were to appear and display countless miraculous transformations, and set forth all kinds of profound teachings, they would not touch a single hair of this. They only serve as a gateway to inspire faith in beginners. Do you understand? The water birds and forest trees themselves point to the essential teaching. They are indeed precise—it is just that few people listen. This is no trivial matter. Demons and heretics are ungrateful and unfaithful. Beings in the six realms deceive and delude themselves. Now, monastics who do not awaken to this become mere shadow-puppets, drifting and sinking in the sea of birth and death—when will they ever rest? You yourselves possess this vast and noble gate, yet you fail to inherit it. Instead, you try to take control within the field of the five aggregates. Can you even dream of this? This vast ground—who can master it? The great earth cannot bear it, and empty space cannot contain it. How could this be a small matter? If you wish to penetrate it, you can clearly awaken right here and now. I do not ask you to grasp a single phenomenon as large as a speck of dust, nor to abandon a single phenomenon as small as a hair's tip. Do you understand?" At that time, a monk asked, "What is the essential teaching passed down from the ancients?" The Master remained silent. The monk asked again, and the Master scolded him. Another monk asked, "What expedient method can lead a student into this?" The Master replied, "Entering \*is\* the expedient." A monk asked, "When a beginner comes, how does the Master instruct him?" The Master said, "Where did you get a beginner from?" A monk said, "I have just entered the monastery and humbly ask the Master to guide me." The Master pointed at him with his staff. The monk said, "I do not understand." The Master said, "My trying to help you like this ends up oppressing you. If you truly affirm yourselves in your own place—whether beginner or seasoned monastic—it can be said you have long been walking with all beings, lacking nothing compared to the Buddhas of the past. Just as the waters of the great ocean—all fish and dragons, from birth to old age, swallow and expel, use and enjoy—are all perfectly equal. Therefore it is said: 'One who first awakens the aspiration stands shoulder to shoulder with the ancient Buddhas.' But unfortunately, from beginningless eons, you have stirred up deluded emotions, forming afflictions. Like a gravely ill person whose mind is feverish and oppressed, your perceptions are inverted and chaotic—all unreal. The realms you now see are exactly the same. Facing your faculties, everything is inverted. The ancients used boundless wondrous medicines to heal and cure, yet even up to the tenth stage of enlightenment they had not fully awakened. You should know it is no easy matter. The ancients pondered it as if mourning the death of their own parents. Now, brothers, you regard it as ordinary. Where else can someone else resolve it for you? What a pity to waste this precious time! Why not closely and quietly investigate, examining with care? When you reach the point where there is no further effort to be made, let all conditions naturally cease. Even if the sprouts have not yet appeared, the seeds remain. If you only follow me beating the drum like a neighbor, spending your energy on meals and mere routine, trying to brush away birth and death with this negligence—would deceiving yourselves for a lifetime be of any benefit? You should truly know it for yourselves. Nothing more to say—take care."
