> Faith in Mind by Third Patriarch Sengcan

> The Supreme Way is not difficult, Only avoid picking and choosing. Just let go of likes and dislikes, And it becomes clear and open. A hair’s breadth of difference, And heaven and earth are set apart. If you want it to appear, Don’t hold to favorable or unfavorable. The struggle between favoring and opposing— This is the mind’s sickness. Without recognizing the profound meaning, It’s futile to still the mind. It is vast as space, Lacking nothing, needing nothing. It is only because of grasping and rejecting That you don’t realize it. Don’t chase conditioned things, Don’t dwell in emptiness as an acceptance. In a single, even-minded state, All distinctions naturally vanish. Trying to stop movement by fixing on stillness— The more you fix, the more it moves. Stuck in such dualities, How can you know the One? Not penetrating the One, You lose your way in both extremes. To reject existence is to cling to existence, To follow emptiness is to turn from emptiness. Excessive words and overthinking Only move you further from accord. Silence and stillness Can reach everywhere without obstruction. Return to the root and grasp the essence; Chase reflections and lose the source. A moment of turning the light inward Surpasses all earlier emptiness. The earlier emptiness changes and shifts— All from wrong views. There’s no need to seek truth; Just cease your opinions. Don’t cling to either of the two extremes, And take care not to chase after them. As soon as there is right and wrong, The mind is confused and lost. The two arise from the One, Yet don’t even hold to the One. Let no thought arise, And the ten thousand things have no fault. No fault, no things— No arising, no mind. As the subject follows the object’s end, The object sinks with the subject’s stillness. Objects are objects because of the subject, Subjects are subjects because of objects. Know that the two are fundamentally one emptiness. One emptiness is the same as the two, Containing all phenomena within. If you don’t see coarse or fine, How can there be prejudice? The Great Way is broad and spacious, Neither easy nor difficult. Petty views are anxious and doubtful; The faster you try, the slower you go. Grasping loses all measure, And you inevitably fall into wrong paths. Release it and let it be natural— Your being has no coming or going. Follow your nature and accord with the Way, Wandering free, never troubled. Tied-up thoughts betray the truth; Dull and weary is not good. Why trouble spirit with likes and dislikes? If you want to take the One Vehicle, Don’t hate the six sense objects. Not hating the six sense objects Is the same as true awakening. The wise do nothing, The foolish bind themselves. The Dharma has no separate dharmas; It’s only confusion that clings to them. To use mind to seek mind— Isn’t that the greatest mistake? Confusion begets stillness and chaos, But enlightenment has no likes or dislikes. All the dualities Come from judgment and deliberation. Illusions, dreams, flowers in the sky— Why bother to grasp them? Gain and loss, right and wrong— Let them all go at once. If the eye never sleeps, All dreams vanish naturally. If the mind does not discriminate, The ten thousand dharmas are one suchness. Suchness is deep and mysterious, Utterly still, beyond conditions. All dharmas seen as one, Return to the natural state. Stop picking and choosing, And no comparison can be made. Movement in stillness has no stillness, Stillness in movement has no movement. When the two are not attained, How can the One remain? At the ultimate end, There are no rules to follow. The mind that accords with equality Causes all doing to cease. All doubt is cleared away, And right faith becomes direct and upright. There is nothing left to retain; Nothing remains to be remembered. The empty and clear mind illuminates itself, Without needing effort. It’s not a place for thinking— Feelings and intellect can’t fathom it. In the true reality of the Dharma realm, There is no self, no other. When you want to directly realize it, Only say: not two. Not two means all are the same, Nothing is not included. The wise of all directions Enter through this principle. This principle is neither short nor long: One thought is ten thousand years. It is nowhere and everywhere, The ten directions are right here before you. The infinitely small is the same as the infinitely large— Boundaries and realms disappear. The infinitely large is the same as the infinitely small— No edges or limits can be seen. Existence is non-existence, Non-existence is existence. If you don’t see this, You must not be attached. One is all, All is one. If you can just see this, Why worry about not reaching the goal? Faith and mind are not two, Not two is faith itself. Words fail; the path of speech is cut— It is not past, future, or present.
