> Monk Wangming's Mind-Quieting Inscription

> The Dharma Realm contains a wish-fulfilling gem. A person long silent, with an inscription engraved on their heart, says: "This is how the ancients guarded their minds. Be cautious! Be cautious! Do not be overly anxious, do not be overly knowing. Too much knowing brings too many affairs; better to stop thinking. Too much anxiety brings too many losses; better to hold on to the One. Anxiety scatters focus, knowing unsettles the heart. A restless heart breeds affliction; a scattered focus hinders the path. Do not say, 'What harm is there?'—the suffering lasts long. Do not ask, 'Why fear it?'—its disaster seethes like boiling water. A single drop of water, if not stopped, will fill the four seas. A speck of dust, if not swept away, will form the Five Peaks. Prevent the end at the beginning; do not underestimate small things. Close your seven openings, seal your six emotions. Do not gaze at forms, do not listen to sounds. One who hears a sound is deaf, one who sees a form is blind. A bit of writing, a little skill, are like midges in the sky; a single talent, one ability, is like a lone lamp under the sun. Wit and talent are but forms of ignorance and delusion. Abandon simplicity, drown in decadence and beauty. The horse of discernment easily gallops, the monkey of the mind is hard to tame. Once the spirit labors, the body will surely be damaged and lost. Evil actions end in confusion, and the path of cultivation remains forever muddy. Do not value cleverness, for it darkens you day by day. Boasting of clumsiness while admiring skillfulness, your virtue will never expand. Fame thick yet conduct thin—such height quickly collapses. Cherishing arrogance inside invites hatred and resentment from without. Whether spoken by the mouth or written by the hand, seeking others’ praise is truly ugly. What the ordinary call good, the sages call fault. Pleasure lasts but a moment, sorrow lingers long. Fearing one’s shadow and running from one’s footprints—the farther you go, the more extreme it becomes. Sit still beneath a tree—the footprint vanishes, the shadow sinks. Tired of birth, troubled by age, with every thought you create anew. If mental fabrications cease, birth and death are forever cut off. No death, no birth, no form, no name. One Path, empty and still, all things are equal. What is noble? What is base? What is shame? What is honor? What is better? What is worse? What is heavy? What is light? The pure sky is ashamed of its purity, the bright sun is embarrassed by its brightness. Peacefully abiding on Mount Tai, as solid as that Golden City. Respectfully, I offer this to wise and virtuous ones—this path is good and enduring."
