> Song of Master Nanyue Lanzan

> Sit quietly, with nothing to do— nothing changes. When there’s nothing to do, why discuss it? With a direct mind, undispersed, you don’t need to cut off other matters. What’s past is already past; don’t calculate the future. Sit quietly, with nothing to do— who ever calls you? To seek outside for “skill” is just the work of a stubborn fool. You don’t store a single grain of food. When you meet a meal, just eat. The busy people of the world, scrambling, can never catch up. I don’t delight in heavenly rebirth, nor do I love merit fields. Hungry, I eat; tired, I sleep. Fools laugh at me; the wise know why. It’s not dullness or stupidity— the original substance is naturally so. Want to leave? Leave. Want to stay? Stay. My body wears a patched robe; my feet wear pants made from birth. Too many words and talk have always led to mutual misunderstanding. If you want to save beings, nothing beats first saving yourself. Don’t vainly seek the true Buddha— the true Buddha can’t be seen. Marvelous nature and spiritual platform— when were they ever tainted or refined? The mind is a “no-thing” mind; the face is the face from birth. Even if the kalpa-stone moves, within this, there’s no change. “No thing” is originally without anything— why read words? Uproot the self-and-other foundation, and mysteriously merge with this meaning. All kinds of toil for body and bone are not as good as sleeping under the forest. Quietly, lift your head— see the sun is high. Beg for food; just follow along. If you force achievement, your exertion just makes you more dull. If you try to grasp, you can’t get it; if you don’t grasp, it’s naturally yours. I have one saying: Cut off thought, let go of conditions. Clever words can’t express it; only transmit it with the heart. I have one more word: Nothing surpasses true giving. Fine as a hair’s tip, vast without location. Originally complete, no need for weaving or stitching. Worldly affairs are endless— not as good as the mountain hills. Green pines shade the sun; blue streams flow long. Mountain clouds are a curtain; the night moon is a hook. Lie under trailing vines; use a stone for a pillow. No audience with the emperor— why envy princes and lords? No fear of birth or death— what more is there to worry about? Water and moon have no form; I am always only still. All phenomena are thus, originally unborn. Sit quietly, with nothing to do— spring has come.
