### 蘇溪和尚即五洩小師也牧護歌

聽說衲僧牧護。任運逍遙無住。一條百衲瓶盂。便是生涯調度。為求至理參尋。不憚寒暑辛苦。還曾四海周游。山水風雲滿肚。內除戒律精嚴。不學威儀行步。三乘笑我無能。我笑三乘謾做。智人權立階梯。大道本無迷悟。達者不假修治。不在能言能語。披麻目視雲霄。遮莫王侯不顧。道人本體如然。不是知佛去處。生也猶如著衫。死也還同脫袴。生也無喜無憂。八風豈能驚怖。外相猶似癡人。肚裏非常峭措。活計雖無一錢。敢與君王鬪富。愚人擺手憎嫌。智者點頭相許。那知傀儡牽抽歌舞盡由行主。一言為報諸人。打破畫瓶歸去。

> A wandering monk once said: I go where fate leads, free and unbound— A tattered robe, a bowl, and a jar, This is all I need to get by. To seek the ultimate truth, I journeyed far, Unbothered by hardship or weather rough. I roamed the four seas, far and wide, My belly filled with mountains, rivers, wind, and clouds. Within, I keep precepts deep and pure, But I don't learn the formal ways or rigid steps. The three vehicles laugh at my lack of skill, But I laugh at their elaborate fuss. The wise set up ladders as a means, Yet the great path has no confusion or awakening. One who gets it needs no artifice or refinement, Nor relies on clever speech or eloquence. Clad in coarse hemp, I gaze at clouds above, Ignoring kings and nobles—let them be! A true practitioner is like this from the start, Not merely knowing where the Buddha goes. Life is like putting on a shirt, Death is like taking off a pair of pants. In life, no joy or sorrow; In death, no fear or dread. The Eight Winds cannot shake me. Outwardly, I may seem like a fool, But inside, I am sharp and lucid. Though I have not a single coin, I dare to compete with emperors for wealth. Fools wave their hands in disgust, The wise nod in approval. Don't you know—the puppet dances and sings, But the puppeteer runs the show. I say this to you all: Break the painted bottle, and go home!
