Preface to the Shurangama Sutra Collected Commentary
The sallow-faced elder said: "If one person awakens to truth and returns to the source, the vast emptiness in all ten directions will completely vanish."
The Fifth Patriarch, Master Fayen, said: "If one person awakens to truth and returns to the source, the vast emptiness in all ten directions will be knocked into and bump against." Both remarks arise from compassion, being words spoken while walking among the grass.
Wang Yuanming, a wise layman from Siming, read the *Shurangama Sutra* and realized for himself: "When examining the mind, there is nowhere to locate it; when discerning true seeing, there is nothing to argue. Therefore, he had this edition re-carved and circulated the sutra. While this may be adding flowers to brocade, it is also like putting dust in the eye."
Now Qianyan says: What more need be said? There are teachers for the sutras, teachers for the treatises. How can this old monk be blamed?
