> We only ask that the World-Honored One, in His great compassion and mercy, reveal to us the path of Serene Stillness, so that all beings of degraded nature may break free from their ignorance and false views. Having spoken thus, they prostrated themselves at His feet, and along with the great assembly, yearned with eager reverence, awaiting His teaching.

> Tiaoxi says: "Icchantika," properly rendered as "Acchāntika," means "without desire"—someone who does not delight in the desire for Nirvana. It is also called "Ecchantika," which translates as "abundant greed"—one who craves the pleasures of birth and death and has no faith in the true Dharma. "Huī" means to destroy. "Mleccha" refers to evil views. The intent is to invite the Thus Come One to reveal the perfect and wondrous teaching, so as to destroy the evil views of those who deny faith and reject the Dharma. In earlier explanations, some held that "Mleccha" was a name for evil views, while others said it referred to a lowly borderland. Now we say: evil views pertain to the cause, and a lowly place pertains to the effect. Whether we say the icchantika's present evil causes are destroyed, or their future evil results are undone, both interpretations make sense.

> The erroneous view is based on the interpretation found in the Kōfuku temple commentary.

> The commentary states: What is meant here is biased, erroneous, and unwholesome views. Those who hold such incorrect views, upon death, will fall into the borderlands—places of low birth and inferior status.

> The commentary says: The five parts of the body, also known as the five wheels, refer to the five rounded places—two elbows, two knees, and the crown of the head. One should cease bowing and fully extend the body, deeply delighting in hearing the Dharma. The Nirvana Sutra further states: An icchantika, which means one lacking faith, or one who has burned away their roots of goodness—this refers to sentient beings who have severed their roots of virtue.
