> Ananda, if this taste arises from your tongue, then in your mouth there is only one tongue. At that moment, if it has already become the flavor of ghee, then when it encounters black rock sugar, it should not shift or change. If it does not change, then it cannot be called "knowing taste." But if it does change, then the tongue is not a single entity—how can one tongue know many flavors? If taste arises from the food itself, food has no consciousness—how could it know itself? And if the food knows itself, that would be the same as another person eating it. What would that have to do with you? How could that be called "your knowing of taste"? If taste arises from empty space, then when you eat void, what flavor should it be? If that void were salty, it would salt your tongue, and also salt your face. Then all people in this world would be like sea fish. Since they would constantly be exposed to saltiness, they would have no idea what blandness is. And if they cannot recognize blandness, they would not perceive saltiness either. With no perception whatsoever, how could this be called "taste"?
