> Thus, there is binding with ropes and wooden restraints.

> The Lone Mountain Cloud says: "Jiao" (校) means "yoke" or "shackle." The Book of Changes states: "Wearing the shackles on the feet diminishes the toes; bearing the shackles on the shoulders diminishes the ears." When worn on the feet, it is called "ju" (屨); when carried on the shoulders, it is called "he" (荷).

> Master Jing said: When a treacherous nature taints one's faith and wisdom is weak, this is like soil that is poor in quality mixing with water. Thus it is drawn out as wood, and there is the torment of ropes and wooden restraints. However, when faith is weak and wisdom is poor, because one commits evil deeds, one receives this evil retribution. But if one uses skillful means to guide living beings and bring them benefit and joy, even if one's faith is still weak, one will instead receive the blessings of palaces and gardens—not because of this evil, but despite it.
