> Those who develop such an understanding fall into the attachment of knowing and not-knowing. They align with Bhaṭṭa and Śreṇika, who hold that all awareness is enlightenment, thus confusing the Buddha's enlightenment and losing their true vision.

> Lone Mountain Cloud says: Those who cling to the notion of consciousness are mistaken—grasses and trees have no consciousness, yet they insist these things possess awareness. The true everlasting mind is one substance without duality; it is through various deluded thoughts that the distinction between the dependent and the primary arises. Therefore, all sentient beings, grasses, and trees are like flowers in the sky—all are transformations of the sentient mind itself. Because they do not understand this clinging, they claim that each blade of grass and each tree has its own consciousness, and thus say that trees become humans upon death and humans become trees. Not understanding the one substance, they mistakenly conceive of it as all-pervasive and complete, and stray far from perfect penetration—this is precisely the root of the error. Bashi and Xianni are the names of two heretical teachers. The Nirvana Sutra refers to them as Vasishtha and Shainika. They claim that all sentience includes grasses and trees, saying that plants have life. What is being revealed here is exactly the same as their view.
