> Pure and Clean King Chapter 25

> The Buddha told the gentlemen of good family: "In the distant past, through countless eons—times so vast they are beyond imagination or measure—there lived a Buddha named the Thus Come One of Total Water Thunder Sound and Starry Flower Wisdom King, who was a True Perfected One, an Equal and Right Awakened One, with perfect clarity and conduct, a Well-Gone One who understood the world, an unexcelled guide, a tamer of those to be tamed, a teacher of gods and humans, a Buddha, a World-Honored One. His world was called Radiant Adornment, and his eon was called Beloved Vision. "Now, gentlemen of good family, during that Buddha's era, there was a king named Pure upon Pure. At that time, the king had a chief queen named Stainless Gift. The queen bore two sons: the first was named Stainless Treasury, and the second was named Stainless Eyes. Both sons had attained supernatural powers—they could soar lightly and fly through the air. They possessed complete wisdom, full virtue, and towering saintly attainment. They practiced the Bodhisattva path with tireless diligence, morning and night, never slacking. With focused minds, they devoted themselves to the six perfections, the four skillful means of boundless salvation, and they thoroughly mastered the thirty-seven practices leading to awakening. They comprehended the path's meaning in all its depth, and in their journey, they entered the samadhi of Freedom from Stain. They also mastered the samadhi of the Sun of Transcendence, the samadhi of Radiant Purity, the samadhi of the Pure Adornment, and the samadhi of the Great Treasury of Power—all these meditative states they penetrated completely, crossing to the far shore of liberation. "At that time, the Buddha gathered an assembly of the fourfold order, along with Shakra, the Four Heavenly Kings, gods, and humans, and proclaimed the Correct Dharma Flower Sutra. The Buddha, in his compassion, thought of all living beings and, grieving for their lands, wished to guide them all onto the great path."

> Then the two crown princes went to their mother, and with joined palms said: "We earnestly ask you to be gracious and kind, to focus your mind and body with compassion, for we wish to go to the Buddha and pay homage to the Thus Come One in person, and to bow in reverence and take refuge. Why? Today the Thus Come One, for the sake of all beings in heaven and on earth, will broadly proclaim the essential scripture, the Correct Dharma Flower Sutra. Therefore we should go and pay our respects and listen to the Correct Dharma Flower." The consort, stainless and pure, told the two princes: "Your father the king clings to heretical views, delights in the Brahmanic ascetics, and is always filled with resentment and anger. Because of this, you cannot go." At that time, the two princes, with one mind and joined palms, again said to their mother: "Our destiny is meager, for we were born into a family of wrong views and no righteousness. Yet we ourselves are originally sons of the Dharma King, and we should transform this impure and mundane world through the teachings of the Way, turning falsehood into truth. Only then are we truly sons of the Buddha." Then the consort, stainless and pure, told the two princes: "Excellent! Go, for you are truly filial children. For the sake of your parents, cultivate great kindness and compassion. Each of you should display your miraculous powers and behold the joy that arises, opening the heart with understanding. Then I will allow you both to go to the Buddha's presence, pay homage, and receive his teachings."

> At that time, the two princes, heeding their mother's instruction, rose into the air and floated seven fathoms above the ground. Moved by compassion for their parents, they each displayed their miraculous powers. Hovering in the sky, they both sat, reclined, walked, and meditated simultaneously. Fire arose from their upper bodies while water streamed from their lower bodies; then water flowed from their upper bodies as fire emerged from below. They radiated brilliant light that shone far and wide. They made their bodies grow tremendously tall, then shrink back to normal size. They descended from the sky into the earth, much like one diving into water, and then sprang up again from the ground. Walking through empty space came as easily to them as treading on solid ground. In these various ways, the two princes displayed their spiritual powers, all in order to open their parents' hearts and guide them toward understanding.

> At that time, the king, witnessing the miraculous powers and majestic virtue of his two sons, was filled with joy and a virtuous mind arose within him. Bowing with his palms together toward his two sons, he said, "Who is the teacher and master whom you two follow?" The two princes replied to their father, the king, "Great King, if you wish to know the teacher and master of us two, it is the Thus-Come One, the Tathāgata of Total Water, Thunder Sound, and Flower of Past Wisdom—he is our teacher and master. He now dwells beneath the jeweled tree, seated upon the Dharma seat, widely proclaiming and expounding the \*Lotus of the True Dharma\* for the fourfold assembly, gods, and people. That Buddha, the World-Honored One, is our teacher and master." The king told his two sons, "I wish to go and visit the teacher and master of you two, to pay homage and personally receive the great sage's true and upright supreme teachings." At that time, the two sons descended from the sky to their mother's place, and addressing their mother with palms together, they said, "Mother, by your virtuous merit, you have transformed our father, the king, causing him to establish the mind of unsurpassed true awakening, thereby achieving the sacred path of the Dharma and the venerable pursuit. We humbly beg you, in your compassion, to grant us leave to go to the Buddha, to renounce the household life and pursue the path, becoming monks."

> At that time, the two princes spoke this verse to their mother:

> "Mother, please let us ordain as monks. An enlightened one is so rarely found— Now is the time to study diligently. What is called rare to encounter, Like the wondrous udumbara flower, Is even harder to meet than that— And the peace of solitude is equally hard to attain."

> At that time, Queen Liguoshi addressed him in verse, saying:

> “I have heard your words, How wonderful, child, that you go— The Saint most rare to meet, I too will leave home and follow.”

> At that time, the two princes, having spoken these verses in praise of the Dharma to repay their parents, again said to their father the king and their birth mother: "We only wish that both our parents, with one mind and heart, would come together to the presence of the Buddha known as General Water-Thunder Sound Star-Flower Wisdom King, and humbly bow in reverence to that world-honored one. Why is this? Dear parents, you should know that the appearance of a Buddha is as rare as the blooming of the udumbara flower, or like the most precious wish-fulfilling jewel. A Buddha, likewise, cannot be encountered twice. Therefore, we have been born in this world, and in our hearts we know that leaving home to practice the path is the foremost merit. For this reason, there should be no difficulty in granting our request." The parents replied: "Excellent! You may leave home and study, casting aside sensual desires and abandoning worldly pursuits. Why is this? If one beholds the Tathagata, blessings and merits are immeasurable. Human life is difficult to obtain, and the presence of a Buddha is rare to encounter. To be free from the eight difficulties, and to gain the peace of stillness, is like being brought back from death to life." The king and queen then told the princes: "So be it. You should know that this is the right time."

> The Buddha said: "Noble child! At that time, within the palace of King Pure Again, the eighty-four thousand palace women and maids were destined by their virtuous roots from past lives to receive and uphold this correct Dharma Flower Sutra. They were vessels of the Dharma by nature. Crown Prince Undefiled Eyes had, through past lives, cultivated merit and accumulated virtue over limitless time. Crown Prince Undefiled Treasury, throughout countless billions of eons, had in previous lives practiced and upheld the samadhi that abandons all beings' lower realms. What is the samadhi that abandons all beings' lower realms? The king's rightful queen, the mother of the two crown princes, Undefiled Grace, understood that all the Buddhas of the ten directions share the same path, that all Buddhas gather the essential truths, and that the profound wisdom of all Buddhas is boundless; she merely manifested in a female body through skillful means."

> The Buddha told the assembled clan members: "At that time, King Pure and Pure Again, having witnessed the miraculous displays of his two sons and how they had transformed themselves into the Thus Come One's true Dharma, had already transcended worldly concerns. Through their holy deeds they had saved many beings, and all who were blind and lost in darkness had been guided to the path of awakening. So the king made a resolution, and together with his queen Consort Unstained by Defilement, his four thousand two hundred attendants, the palace ladies, and the officials of his court, he went with his two sons to pay homage to the Buddha. They bowed their heads at his feet and then took their seats according to their customary places. When the Buddha saw King Pure and Pure Again and his great retinue renounce their worldly authority and take refuge in him, he looked into their past karma and the roots of their spiritual destiny, and then spoke the Dharma to them. He prescribed the medicine suited to their ailments, and each one found understanding and liberation. They were overjoyed, and virtuous thoughts arose within them. The king then installed a new monarch to rule, and together with his queen Consort Unstained by Defilement, his two sons, the palace ladies, and all his officials, he gave up his kingdom and his throne to live as a renunciant monk. Having entered the monastic life, for eighty-four thousand years he cultivated the spiritual path, contemplating and penetrating the essential meaning of this Correct Dharma Flower Sutra, reciting it, and practicing it in accordance with the Buddha's teachings without any deviation."

> Then the Pure and Cleansed King, diligently honoring and cultivating the Correct Dharma Flower Sutra, together with his family, passed eighty-four thousand years, and attained the roots of virtue and the serene, pure samadhi of meditative concentration. As soon as he attained this samadhi, his body instantly soared into the sky, rising forty-nine feet above the ground, and dwelling in space, he addressed the Thus Come One, the True Hero, the Universal Water Thunder Sound and Flower King of Wisdom: "Indeed, World-Honored One, these two sons are truly holy teachers who have guided our family through their grace and virtue. Through their manifestation of spiritual powers and display of transformations, upon witnessing these miraculous transformations, my mind has been opened and liberated. I have renounced worldly life and entered the path, honoring the Buddha's teachings to rescue beings from defilement and adversity, following the Dharma and abiding firmly in the supreme. I have been able to attend upon the Thus Come One, receive and uphold the Dharma teachings, for they are the most sacred, unsurpassed virtuous teachers. These two sons manifested the appearance of sons born into my household, but they are beings who, from past lives, clearly recognize their fundamental virtue. Through the Buddha's compassionate grace, they are beyond what ordinary people can fathom or discuss." The Buddha told the king: "So it is, so it is! Great King, just as you have said, these two crown princes, through their accumulated virtuous roots from past lives, were able to manifest in this way, precisely to illuminate the king, his family, and all sentient beings."

> The Buddha said, "Great King! If sons and daughters of good families study this scripture, wherever they are born throughout their journeys in life, they will easily encounter virtuous teachers who reveal the teachings of the World-Honored One. They will attain the supreme true path, guiding and delivering all beings. This is the subtle, boundless work of merit—teaching one another, perfecting one another, and reaching the noble truth of the ultimate realm. Encountering the Buddha's path, the Dharma, and the King of Teachings, they meet good teachers and see the Thus-Gone One, receiving the scriptures and Dharma. This comes from the power of encouragement and support. Great King, do you now see these two princes? These sons of good families have, in past lives, already made offerings and served Buddhas, Thus-Gone Ones, as numerous as the sands of sixty-five billion, hundred thousand, trillion, and countless rivers—and they have also upheld and recited this \*Correct Dharma Flower Scripture\*. Out of compassion for beings drowning in the darkness of the ninety-six heretical paths, unable to save themselves, they have guided and transformed them, establishing them in right views, cultivating diligence, and seeking the great Buddha path."

> Then the Buddha said to the householders, "King Pure Again, at that time, praised the many virtues of the assembly. Descending from the sky, he pressed his ten fingers together and said to the Buddha: 'Please, Buddha, proclaim what merits the Thus Come One, the Perfect One, accumulated in his past lives. His holy wisdom is lofty and vast. The mark between his brows emits great brilliance, illuminating countless lands. His eyes are clear and beautiful, seeing clearly the ten directions. The hair mark between his brows, white like snow-white conch, soft and fine, lofty and radiant, level and upright without slant, shining upon all without exception. The World-Honored One's face is full like the sun, the Enlightened One's eyes like the early moon, and all who behold them never tire of seeing.'"

> At that time, the king spoke this verse:

> "Their extraordinary merit and achievements, In countless billions and hundreds of millions, Even the vastness of space could be described, But their wisdom is beyond all measure."

> The Buddha replied with a verse:

> "Because in past lives they walked the middle path, And gave with fairness to all, The sign between the brows appeared, Its light shining without limit. With gentle gaze they offered the lamp of wisdom, Their eyes brighter than sun and moon, Clear as the rising moon, Seeing through to all lands in the ten directions."

> Then the king, marveling with admiration, joined his palms and said to the Buddha: "This is truly unprecedented! The teachings of the Thus-Come One, the Perfect One, are vast in compassion, immeasurable in wonder, complete in merit and virtue. You unfold the meaning of the path and establish precepts, so that beings may be free from wrongdoing and the perils of the long road, finding safety without harm. Indeed, O World-Honored One, my mind today is not lax, I have gained freedom and do not follow wrong paths. I have cast aside pride and do not follow falsehood, nor do I harbor hatred or thoughts of useless, unwholesome deeds. My kingdom keeps me busy, yet I wish to leave home and seek the Way, not returning to the palace. Moreover, I wish to offer all that I possess as offerings." The Buddha said: "Excellent." Then the king rose and bowed at the Buddha's feet. His queen, Lishikshi the Pure, removed the hundred thousand precious necklaces adorning her body and scattered them over the Buddha. Through the Buddha's majestic power, these transformed into a jeweled canopy with interlaced ornaments, a wondrous and magnificent tent. Naturally, a couch appeared within it, spread with countless rare and fine cushions, and the Buddha sat upon it. At that moment, the king thought to himself: "This is truly unprecedented! In the canopy of interlaced jewels, I behold the Thus-Come One of supreme virtue. He is most dignified, his majesty towering, his radiance foremost. His countenance is full and pure, incomparably fine. May all beings share in this blessing!"

> At that time, the World-Honored One addressed the fourfold assembly: "Do you see King Pure Again, who stands before the Buddha with palms pressed together, single-minded and reverent?" They all replied: "We see him." The Buddha said: "Monks! This king is now a disciple of mine, manifesting the appearance of a monk in this world. In a future age, he will attain Buddhahood, known as King of the Pure Land Thus Come One, the Worthy One, the Fully Enlightened One, perfect in clarity and conduct, the Well-Gone, the Knower of the World, the Supreme One, the Tamer of the Path, the Teacher of Gods and Humans, the Buddha, the World-Honored One. His Buddha land will be called Vast Universal, and his kalpa will be called Surpassing King. At that time, the Bodhisattvas in that Buddha's land will be immeasurable, and the disciples of his assembly will likewise be countless. The world of that Buddha will be level like the palm of a hand, without slopes or jagged rocks. When he attains Buddhahood, his majestic power will be towering and vast, boundless and radiant like this."

> The Able One, the Thus-Gone One, told the disciple of good family: "If you wish to know who that Pure Again Pure King was who set his mind on enlightenment — do not think he was someone else. Why? He is now the present Lotus Crown Bodhisattva. If you wish to know who the Stainless Queen was then — she is now the Bodhisattva Radiant Light Adornment. She always remembered the bodhisattvas and, out of compassion for living beings, was born in that land to teach and transform them. If you wish to know who the two princes were then — they are now the Medicine King Bodhisattva and the Superior Medicine Bodhisattva. Moreover, disciple of good family, the Medicine King Bodhisattva and the Superior Medicine Bodhisattva possess vast and immeasurable virtue like this. In countless hundreds of thousands of millions of eons, they have planted numerous roots of goodness at the feet of many Thus-Gone Ones. These two noble beings have perfected their virtue completely — beyond all thought or imagination. Should anyone hear the names of these two noble beings and hold them in their hearts, all people should revere and honor them. Such practitioners will be looked up to by both gods and humans throughout heaven and earth."

> When the Buddha spoke of these deeds from his past lives, eighty-four thousand people became free from defilement, their eyes of Dharma purified and clear.
