> Chapter 16: Purifying Karmic Obstacles

> Further, Subhuti, if a good man or good woman who upholds, recites, and studies this sutra is looked down upon by others, it is because of their past negative karma from previous lives that would have led them to fall into lower realms. But because of being looked down upon in this life, those past negative karmas are eliminated, and they will attain Supreme Perfect Enlightenment.

> The Buddha said: Those who uphold the scriptures will receive the respect and offerings of all heavenly beings and humans. Yet because of heavy karmic obstacles from past lives, even though they now uphold the profound teachings of the Buddhas, they are often looked down upon and not respected or supported by others. However, because they uphold the scriptures, they do not give rise to notions of self or others, nor do they distinguish between friend and foe. They always practice respect and maintain a mind free of resentment and anger, open-minded and without calculation. In every thought, they practice the Perfection of Wisdom without ever retreating. Because they practice in this way, they are able to dissolve all the most severe evil karmic obstacles accumulated over countless eons, down to this very life. From a deeper perspective, "past lives" refers to the deluded mind of previous thoughts, while "this life" refers to the awakened mind of present thoughts. When the awakened mind of the present thought sees through the deluded mind of the previous thought, the delusion cannot sustain itself. Thus, it is said that the karmic offenses of past lives are eliminated. Once deluded thoughts are gone, negative karma can no longer form, and one attains enlightenment.

> Subhuti, I recall that countless eons ago, before the Buddha of Radiant Light, I encountered and served eight hundred and forty thousand million billion Buddhas, honoring each without exception. But in the final age, if someone can uphold, recite, and study this scripture, the merit they gain would far exceed mine from those offerings—not by a hundredth, or a thousandth, or a millionth, but beyond any measure of comparison.

> Subhuti! If a good man or good woman, in the final age of the dharma, receives, upholds, reads, and recites this sutra, the merit they gain—if I were to describe it in full—some who hear it would become frantic, bewildered, skeptical, and disbelieving.

> The Buddha said: In the age of the end of the Dharma, sentient beings have thin virtue and heavy defilements, jealousy runs deep, and wrong views blaze fiercely. In such times, if there are good men and good women who accept, uphold, recite, and study this sutra, perfecting the characteristics of Dharma without any attainment, constantly practicing kindness, compassion, joy, and equanimity in every moment, remaining humble, gentle, and harmonious, they will ultimately accomplish supreme enlightenment. Some people, unaware that the true Dharma of the Thus Come One is eternal and never perishes, hear that in the five hundred years after the Thus Come One's passing, some can realize the mind of no-form, practice the conduct of no-form, and attain Anuttara Samyaksambodhi—supreme perfect enlightenment—they will surely be shocked and terrified, overwhelmed by doubt and disbelief.

> Subhuti! Know that the meaning of this sutra is inconceivable, and its rewards are likewise inconceivable.

> This teaching is the practice of non-attachment and formlessness. Calling it “inconceivable” is praise for this practice of non-attachment and formlessness, which can lead to the attainment of Supreme Perfect Enlightenment.
