> Chapter 34

> Monks, the Tathagata knows such things as they truly are—understanding that "this kind of clinging, this kind of grasping, leads to such a destiny, to such a rebirth." Yet the Tathagata does not stop at this knowledge; what he knows goes far beyond. Still, he does not cling to what he knows, and because he does not cling, he finds inner peace and stillness. Monks, this is how the Tathagata truly understands the arising of feeling, the passing away of feeling, the satisfaction in feeling, the danger in feeling, and the escape from feeling—freeing himself without grasping. Monks, these truths are realized and proclaimed by the Tathagata through his own direct knowledge. They are profound, hard to see, hard to comprehend, peaceful, sublime, beyond the reach of mere thought, extremely subtle, and only the wise can understand them. When people praise the Tathagata, it is only by speaking of these truths that they offer genuine and rightful praise.
