彼得信歸依者．以其所見．語未信未歸依者言．「友奇特哉．友．希有哉沙門之大神通大威德也。我見一比丘．能觀諸有情．及他人之心．觀察心所．觀察尋伺．言「汝意如是．汝意如是汝心如是。」」彼未信未歸依者．將如是答彼得信歸依者言．「友．有明咒曰摩尼柯。彼比丘者．以此明咒．觀諸有情．及他人心．觀察心所．乃至言「汝意如是．汝意如是．汝心如是。」」堅固．汝意云何。彼未信未歸依者於彼得信歸依者．將為是言不耶。』『世尊．將為如是言．』『堅固．是故我於觀察他心神變．作過患觀．厭惡慚愧．而避之也。

> Peter, a devoted lay follower, speaks to those who have not yet gained faith, saying: "Friend, how extraordinary! How remarkable is the great power and majesty of the ascetic! I saw a monk who could perceive the minds of all beings, discerning their thoughts, their intentions, and their mental states, saying: 'This is what you think, this is what you intend, this is your state of mind.'" But those who have not yet gained faith would respond to Peter, the devoted follower, saying: "Friend, there is a secret charm called the Manika spell. That monk uses this charm to read the minds of all beings, discerning their thoughts, mental states, and saying: 'This is what you think, this is what you intend, this is your state of mind.'" The Buddha then asked: "Bhikkhus, what do you think? Would those without faith respond to the devoted follower in this way?" "Indeed, Lord, they would." "Therefore, bhikkhus, I see the danger in the miracle of reading others' minds, and feeling aversion and shame toward it, I avoid it."
