從前．梵與王在波羅奈城治國時．菩薩生而為虛空神。那時恰值波羅奈城舉行迦底加祭的夜祭。各街道裝飾得如美麗的天國．全城人們興高彩烈．作著各種餘興。時有一個窮漢．他只有一襲粗劣的衣服。因屢經洗濯着用。到處都滿了摺皺。

> Long ago, when King Brahmadatta ruled in Varanasi, the Bodhisattva was born as a spirit of the sky. At that time, the city of Varanasi was holding the Kattika festival with a night vigil. Every street was adorned as beautifully as the heavens, and the whole city was filled with joy as people engaged in various amusements. At that time, there was a poor man who owned only a single coarse garment. Because it had been washed and worn many times, it was covered in wrinkles everywhere.

然而他的妻卻帶執拗向他說道．『喂．我想穿了濃染的紅藍華服．再披上外衣．與你一同出去看迦底加祭的夜祭。』男的聽了很窘．說道．『你怎麼說出這樣的話來。我們窮人能穿了濃染的紅藍華服．悠閒地散步嗎。』那女的嗔怒道．『沒有紅藍的華服．我不出去看夜祭了。請你帶別的女子同去吧。』男的問道．『你怎麼說出這樣無理的話來與我為難。究竟要怎樣做纔能得到紅藍的華服呢。』女的教他道．『男子漢有志氣．甚麼事做不來。哪．國王的紅藍園裏就有許多紅藍草啦。』男的道．『啊．你這個人啊．那地方好比鬼神所管領的蓮池．而且監視極嚴．無論怎樣也不能走近去的。你不要起這種無理的妄想．還是滿足於現在所有的吧。』女的強勸道．『現在是夜半．黑暗無光。一個男子單身總可去得吧。』他被她如是再三地勸唆．遂為愛情所縛．終於答應下來了。『安心吧．你勿焦憂。』他安慰了她一番．就在那夜抱著犧牲性命的決心．離了那街．來到國王的紅藍園中．破了籬笆潛入內苑。守衛聽到了破籬的聲音．說『有賊．』將他圍住．捉住了他的手足．打罵一頓．然後將他綁起來。

天亮以後．他被拉到國王的面前來了。國王命令道．『拉去遊街．並處以磔刑．將他刺死。』於是把他反綁起來．鳴鐘擊鼓．押著遊街示眾．然後用銳利的槍刺他。那苦痛真是難熬。又有一隻鳥停在他的頭上．用尖銳如刺的嘴去啄他的眼珠。然而他對於這種苦痛毫不介意．只是一昧想著他妻子的事自想『我不能使你穿了紅藍的濃染華服．兩手搭在肩上．一同去看迦底加祭的夜景．非常覺得可惜。』唱出下面的偈語來。

> At dawn, he was brought before the king. The king commanded, "Take him through the streets, then execute him by piercing." So they bound his hands behind his back, rang bells, beat drums, and paraded him through the town, before stabbing him with sharp spears. The pain was unbearable. A bird also landed on his head and pecked at his eyes with a beak as sharp as a thorn. Yet he paid no mind to this suffering, thinking only of his wife, lamenting, "I regret that I cannot dress you in rich red and blue robes, place my hands on your shoulders, and watch the night scene of the Kātikā festival together with you." And he sang the following verse.

鳥雖來啄我眼． 我卻不覺得怎麼痛。不能與穿濃染的紅藍服的妻。 互攜著手．去看迦底加的星祭． 真是恨事。

> Although the birds come to peck at my eyes, I do not feel much pain. What I truly regret is that I cannot hold hands with my wife, dressed in deep-dyed robes of red and blue, and go together to watch the star festival of Kātikā.

他臨終如是悲痛着妻子的事．死後墮入地獄。

> In his final moments, he was overcome with grief over his wife. After death, he fell into hell.
