### 第三　明經

> Chapter 3: Clarifying the Sutra

此是諦實，世尊如是語，此經是世尊證阿羅漢已，說。

> This is the truth, as the World-Honored One spoke it. This sutra was spoken by the World-Honored One after attaining arhatship.

如是我聞，諸比丘，無明是導引不善業，而繼之無慚無愧。諸比丘明是導引善業，而繼之有慚有愧。

> Thus have I heard: "Monks, ignorance leads to unwholesome actions, followed by a lack of shame and fear of wrongdoing. Monks, wisdom leads to wholesome actions, followed by a sense of shame and fear of wrongdoing."

世尊說是義已，於彼經中，世尊說如是偈。

> After the World-Honored One had explained this meaning, he spoke these verses in that sutra:

此世他世， 等等惡趣， 無明為根， 貪欲所造， 有惡欲人， 無慚無愧，而有惡生， 因惡之故， 墮入地獄。 以此之故， 汝等比丘， 當斷欲貪，及彼無明。 令明生長， 則斷惡趣。

> In this world and the next, And in all wretched realms, Ignorance is the root, Forged by craving and desire. A person with wicked longings, Shameless and without remorse, Is born into misery, And because of that evil, Falls into hell. Therefore, O monks, Cut off craving and desire, And that ignorance as well. Let wisdom grow and flourish, And you will sever the path to suffering.

世尊說如是義，如是我聞。
