Sutra on the Mind of Loyalty

Translated by Zhu Tanwulan, Tripitaka Master from India during the Eastern Jin Dynasty.

This is what I heard:

Once, the Buddha was staying in the Jeta Grove, in the Garden of the Benefactor of the Orphans and the Solitary, near the city of Shravasti. At that time, bodhisattvas, disciples of the fourfold assembly, devas, nagas, spirits, kings, ministers, and common people gathered daily to hear the Dharma. To the Buddha’s right sat a monk named Maudgalyayana, whose spiritual powers were supremely refined and whose wisdom was as vast as empty space. Adapting to circumstances and skillfully combining expedient means with wisdom, he saved countless beings—as numerous as the sands of the Ganges. All celestial beings bowed to him in reverence, regarding him as their teacher.

The Buddha told Maudgalyayana, "There is a large kingdom eight thousand miles from here, located in a border region. The people there have never seen the sublime sacred presence of the Three Jewels, nor have they ever heard of the Tathagata, the Arahant, the Fully and Perfectly Enlightened One and his wondrous, pure teachings. They cling to upside-down views and follow various wrong paths, believing them to be the ultimate truth. The king and his subjects serve five hundred Brahmin ascetics, each of whom possesses five kinds of supernatural powers. Their powers are strong enough to move mountains, stop rivers, and create multiple bodies at will. There is a huge mountain in the kingdom that blocks the people's roads, causing the entire nation great distress. The king explained the difficulty of the mountain to the Brahmins, who replied, 'We ourselves will remove this trouble for the people—do not worry, your majesty!' They then sat around the mountain, each concentrating their mind, and through the power of their meditative concentration, the mountain began to rise and was about to move."

The Brahmin was astonished and said, "This mountain has risen up! Who turned it back? The sun has also lost its light—surely something is behind this!" Among them, there was a wise man who, by focusing his mind, examined the hearts of the disciples to see who was impure and had caused the mountain not to move. He perceived that all their hearts were pure in the Way—the glories and treasures of the kingdom did not defile their minds. Then he looked up and saw a monk sitting on top of the mountain. All the Brahmins exclaimed, "This is exactly the work of Gautama's disciple!" The Brahmin shouted, "The king ordered us to remove the trouble for the people—why are you stopping it?"
