### 遺錢不顧

> Left Money Unclaimed

隨富。上依益州淨德寺止宿。繫大笠道傍坐。其下讀經。人往來不喚令施。有施者亦不呪願。以路靜故。多載無所獲。人謂曰。城西北人稠施多。奚為在此。答曰。一錢兩錢足支身命。復用多為。陵州刺史趙仲舒者。三代酷吏也。甚無信敬。聞故往試。騎馬過之。佯墮貫錢。富讀經自若。目未曾覩。去遠。舒令人取錢。富亦不顧。舒乃問曰。爾終日所得一錢。貫錢在地見人持去何不止之。曰。非貧道物。何為妄認。舒下馬禮謝。嘆服而去。

> Relying on Fortune. He once stayed overnight at Jingde Temple in Yizhou, hanging his large bamboo hat by the roadside, sitting beneath it to read sutras. People came and went, but he neither called out to solicit alms nor made blessings for those who gave. Because the road was quiet, many passed by without offerings. Someone said to him, “In the northwestern part of the city, there are many people and more generous alms. Why stay here?” He replied, “One or two coins are enough to support my body and life. What use is more?” Zhao Zhongshu, the prefect of Lingzhou, was from three generations of harsh officials and had little faith or respect. Hearing about this, he went to test him. Riding past on horseback, he deliberately dropped a string of coins. Fortune continued reading his sutra as if nothing had happened, not even glancing at it. After riding far away, Zhao sent someone to retrieve the money, but Fortune still paid no attention. Zhao then asked him, “Your daily earnings amount to just one coin. A string of coins lay on the ground, and you saw someone take it away—why didn’t you stop them?” Fortune replied, “That was not my property. Why should I falsely claim it?” Zhao dismounted, bowed in apology, and left filled with admiration and submission.
