The Sutra of the Eight Universal Secret Dhāraṇīs is an important esoteric Buddhist scripture translated by the eminent Tang dynasty monk Xuanzang, belonging to the category of esoteric dhāraṇī texts. This sutra records eight secret mantras and their merits, emphasizing that reciting these dhāraṇīs can eliminate karmic obstacles and attain blessings and wisdom. Xuanzang brought the Sanskrit manuscript back from India during the Zhenguan era and translated it into Chinese, reflecting the flourishing dissemination of esoteric scriptures in the Tang dynasty. The eight universal secret dhāraṇīs described in the sutra possess functions such as dispelling calamities, prolonging life, and purifying karma, holding a special position within the esoteric practice system. As an early esoteric text transmitted to China, this sutra provides a precious source for studying the development of Chinese esoteric Buddhism and serves as important material for understanding Xuanzang’s translation endeavors, possessing irreplaceable value among esoteric Buddhist scriptures.

Eight Deities Secret Dharani Sutra

Translation by the Tang Dynasty Tripitaka Master Xuanzang, by Imperial Decree

Thus I have heard:

Once, the World-Honored One was staying in the Jetavana Grove, in Anathapindika’s Garden, near the city of Shravasti. With him were a community of great monks, one thousand two hundred and fifty in number, as well as countless, measureless bodhisattvas and great beings, and also various celestial and human beings, asuras, and other gathered assemblies—all surrounding him.

The World-Honored One then said to Vajrapani Bodhisattva: "Good man! The great bright mantras you have received are powerful and majestic in their divine function, yet their practice is difficult to accomplish. Although they bring benefits later, at first they may cause minor harm. Now there exists an Eight-Name Universal Secret Mantra—its virtue is vast, its practice is easy, its divine function remains secret, and it brings no harm from beginning to end. Those who receive and uphold it will surely gain benefit and joy. I shall teach it to you now—are you willing to hear it?" Instantly, Vajrapani, filled with joy and reverence, prostrated at the Buddha’s feet. Kneeling on his right knee with palms joined, he requested: "World-Honored One, please teach it to us."

The Buddha said: "Listen closely, and reflect upon this with utmost care. I will now explain and elaborate for you. What are the eight names of the all-pervading secret mantra? The first is 'Treasury of Merits,' the second is 'Ornamented Elephant Ears,' the third is 'Good and Valiant,' the fourth is 'Cloud of Supreme Truth,' the fifth is 'Blazing Success,' the sixth is 'Subtle and Beautiful Form,' the seventh is 'Adorned,' and the eighth is 'Diamond.'

If anyone hears these eight names of the mantra, for seven hundred trillion hundreds of thousands of great eons in future lives, they will not fall into hell, the realm of animals, or the realm of hungry ghosts. At the time of death, their body and mind will be at peace, and they will see various Buddhas and Bodhisattvas appear before them, teaching the profound and essential teachings of the Great Vehicle. After hearing this Dharma, they will surely be reborn in the Tushita Heaven to serve and honor Maitreya. Later, they will follow Maitreya as he descends to Jambudvipa, and their practice and vows will gradually increase until they perfect the ultimate goal.

The dharani is:

"Counteract misfortune! Counteract misfortune! Crush misfortune! Peace! Perfect peace! Liberation! May all actions be fulfilled! Heal! Unite! Merge! Completely integrate! May all actions be accomplished through this powerful mantra and its practice. So be it."

The Buddha spoke this Great Secret Mantra, and upon hearing it, eight thousand kotis of malicious spirits and ghosts rejoiced, abandoned their poisonous intentions, and took refuge in the Buddha, the Dharma, and the Sangha. They cut off evil and cultivated goodness, and together came before the Buddha to make a sincere vow: "We vow to always protect and uphold this great spiritual mantra, so that those who receive and uphold it may enjoy peace of body and mind."

The Buddha said: "Excellent! May it be as you wish. If there are good men or good women who take refuge in the Buddha, the Dharma, the Sangha, and Vajrapani, who dwell in quiet places and steadfastly cultivate pure conduct, who draw near to stupas to receive, uphold, recite, and study this mantra, none of their virtuous aspirations will go unfulfilled—up to and including unsurpassed, perfect enlightenment—and they will always remember their past lives without any forgetfulness."

When the Blessed One had spoken this sutra, all who had gathered—including Vajrapani and the other bodhisattvas, along with the heavenly beings, humans, and asuras—rejoiced greatly upon hearing the Buddha’s words and faithfully accepted and put them into practice.
