The country of Agni is over six hundred li in length from east to west, and over four hundred li in breadth from north to south. The capital city is about six or seven li in circumference. It is surrounded by mountains on all sides, making the roads perilous and the territory easy to defend. Streams and springs interlace the land, and water is channeled for irrigation. The soil is suitable for millet, grain, winter wheat, fragrant jujubes, grapes, pears, apples, and other fruits. The climate is mild and agreeable, and the local customs are simple and straightforward. Their script is modeled after that of India, but with slight variations. The people wear felt and woolen garments, cut their hair short, and do not wear head coverings. Currency includes gold, silver, and small copper coins.
The king is a native of the land, brave but somewhat lacking in strategy; he is fond of boasting about his own accomplishments. The kingdom lacks a proper system of governance, and its laws are not strictly enforced. There are over ten monasteries, with more than two thousand monks who study the Sarvastivada, a school of the Small Vehicle. Their scriptures, precepts, and liturgical rules follow Indian traditions, and those who study them carefully examine and appreciate the texts themselves. Their observance of precepts and discipline is pure, diligent, and earnest. However, since they also eat the three kinds of pure meat, they are still attached to the gradual path of teaching.
