Imperial Preface to the "Great Compassion Dharani Sutra"

I have heard:

The Bodhisattva Avalokiteśvara made a great vow: to enter every single dust-mote realm of existence, to rescue and lift up all living beings, and to free them from every kind of suffering. For this reason, this mantra of immeasurable merit and total mastery is proclaimed.

All virtuous men and women, all living beings, who with utmost sincerity recite, uphold, and revere this sutra and mantra, will find themselves far removed from all evil realms and all forms of suffering and harm. They will attain perfect harmony and ascend to the wondrous path.

If these ocean waves moisten and the gentle breeze touches, karmic obstacles are released and dissolved, and one attains this supreme fruit. This is not merely heard by the ear, but truly witnessed by the eye—a clear proof and great testimony.

If there are persons of wisdom and merit, with profound capacity and steadfast resolve, who diligently uphold and recite, practicing without cease, and who further widely expound and teach, the merit and virtue of this sutra and mantra are inconceivable.

If those of little merit or faith encounter this teaching, they too will give rise to faith and understanding, and equally transcend to the Buddha's realm. This is true and not false.

The Bodhisattva Avalokiteśvara’s vows are vast and profound, arising from great compassion to save and deliver all sentient beings.

I, the sovereign who rules over all under heaven, grieve for the multitude lost in confusion and ignorance, sinking into the five defilements unaware. With this sutra and mantra, I employ skillful means to awaken and uplift, so that all living beings may transcend to the Buddha's realm.

Moreover, the Tathagata's teachings place foremost importance on loyalty and filial piety. All loyal ministers and filial children who can devote their hearts to serving their sovereign and exhaust their strength in caring for their parents, whose actions and conduct are free from selfish cunning and devious deeds, who widely accumulate hidden merits, aid others and benefit all beings, and who can also uphold and recite this sutra and mantra—then with every step they take, they shall behold the Tathagata.

If one is disloyal and unfilial, lacking reverence and awe, then the spirits and deities will record such deeds, silently inflicting punishment; in the blink of an eye, one may fall into the hells.

For good and evil are two paths that men may tread; let all our multitudes carefully choose between them. I write this as an exhortation!

The Sutra of the Great Compassionate Heart Dharani of the Thousand-Handed and Thousand-Eyed Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva

Translated by the Śramaṇa Gavadama from Western India during the Tang Dynasty.

Thus have I heard:

At one time, Śākyamuni Buddha was dwelling on Mount Potalaka, in the palace of Avalokiteśvara, within the jewel-adorned Dharma assembly. He sat upon a jeweled lion throne. That throne was entirely adorned with innumerable and various mani jewels, with hundreds of jeweled banners and streamers suspended all around. At that time, the Tathāgata, upon that throne, was about to expound the dhāraṇī of total retention.

Together with countless great bodhisattva-mahāsattvas, whose names were: Dhāraṇī King Bodhisattva, Jewel King Bodhisattva, Medicine King Bodhisattva, Supreme Medicine Bodhisattva, Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva, Mahāsthāmaprāpta Bodhisattva, Flower Adornment Bodhisattva, Great Dignity Bodhisattva, Jewel Treasury Bodhisattva, Virtue Treasury Bodhisattva, Vajra Treasury Bodhisattva, Space Treasury Bodhisattva, Maitreya Bodhisattva, Samantabhadra Bodhisattva, Mañjuśrī Bodhisattva, and others such as these great bodhisattva-mahāsattvas—all were consecrated great Dharma princes.

And with immeasurable, countless great śrāvaka monks, all practicing the ten stages of the Arhat, with Mahākāśyapa as their leader.

Together with immeasurable Brahma Marā devas, with Śaṭa Brahmā as their leader.

And together with countless heavenly beings from the desire realm, with the heavenly being Gopaka as their leader.

Accompanied by countless protectors of the world, the Four Heavenly Kings, with Dhṛtarāṣṭra as their leader.

Together with countless gods, dragons, yakṣas, gandharvas, asuras, garuḍas, kiṁnaras, mahoragas, humans, and non-humans, with the Heavenly Virtue Great Dragon King at their head.

And together with countless goddesses from the desire realm, with the maiden-eyed goddess at their head.

And with immeasurable spirits of the void, spirits of rivers and seas, spirits of springs and sources, spirits of streams and marshes, spirits of medicinal herbs, spirits of groves and forests, spirits of dwellings and houses, spirits of water, spirits of fire, spirits of the earth, spirits of the wind, spirits of the soil, spirits of mountains, spirits of stones, spirits of palaces and halls, and others—all gathered together.

At that time, the Bodhisattva Avalokiteśvara, within the great assembly, secretly manifested spiritual powers. A brilliant radiance shone forth, illuminating the ten-directional lands and this trichiliocosm, all turning to the color of gold. The celestial palaces, dragon palaces, and the palaces of all honored deities all trembled and quaked. Rivers, great seas, the Iron Encircling Mountains, Mount Sumeru, earthen mountains, and black mountains also greatly shook. The light of the sun, the moon, pearls, fire, and the constellations all ceased to appear.

Then the Bodhisattva Sovereign of Dhāraṇī, beholding this rare and wondrous sign, marveled at what had never been before. Rising from his seat, he placed his palms together and addressed the Buddha in verse, inquiring, “Whose spiritual power has manifested this extraordinary sign?” He asked in verse:

"Who on this day attains perfect enlightenment, Radiating such great light so bright, All lands in ten directions turn to gold, Likewise the three thousandfold world.

Who on this day gains sovereign might, Manifesting wondrous powers of great height, Countless Buddha‑lands quake and sway, Dragon‑spirit palaces tremble in disarray.

Now this assembly, all in doubt, Cannot fathom the cause and reason throughout: Is it Buddha, Bodhisattva, or great Śrāvaka’s might? Or Brahmā, Māra, Śakra, or devas in sight?

O World‑Honored One, with compassion vast, Pray tell from whence these powers are cast!"

The Buddha addressed the Bodhisattva Sovereign of Total Retention, saying:

"Virtuous men! You should know that within this assembly, there is a great bodhisattva named 'Avalokiteśvara, the Sovereign of Freedom.' Since countless kalpas ago, he has perfected great compassion and loving-kindness, skillfully cultivating innumerable dhāraṇī gates. For the sake of bringing peace and happiness to all sentient beings, he secretly manifests such great powers of supernatural ability."

When the Buddha had spoken these words, the Bodhisattva Avalokiteśvara (Guanyin) rose from his seat, arranged his robes, joined his palms toward the Buddha, and addressed him, saying: "World-Honored One, I possess a great compassionate heart dhāraṇī mantra, which I now wish to proclaim. It is for the sake of enabling all sentient beings to attain peace and happiness, to eradicate all illnesses, to obtain long life, to gain abundance, to eliminate all evil deeds and grave offenses, to be freed from obstacles and difficulties, to increase all wholesome dharmas and virtuous merits, to accomplish all roots of goodness, to be far removed from all fears, and to swiftly fulfill all that is sought and desired. I pray only that the World-Honored One, in his compassionate kindness, will grant me permission to speak it."

The Buddha said: "Noble son! With your great compassion, you bring peace and joy to all beings. Now that you wish to proclaim the divine mantra, the time has come. You should swiftly proclaim it. The Tathāgata rejoices, and so do all Buddhas."

The Bodhisattva Avalokiteśvara (Guanyin) respectfully addressed the Buddha once more, saying:

"World-Honored One! I recall countless eons ago, a Buddha appeared in the world named ‘King of Thousand Lights, Abiding in Serenity Thus Come One.’ Out of compassion for me and for the sake of all sentient beings, that Buddha, the World-Honored One, proclaimed this ‘Vast, Perfect, Unobstructed Great Compassion Heart Dhāraṇī.’ With his golden hand, he touched my crown and spoke these words: ‘Good man, you should uphold this heart mantra and universally bring great benefit and happiness to all sentient beings in the future evil age.’"

At that moment, I first abided in the First Ground. Upon hearing this mantra, I immediately transcended to the Eighth Ground. My heart filled with joy, and I then made this vow: "If in the future I shall be capable of benefiting and bringing peace and happiness to all sentient beings, may I instantly manifest a body with a thousand hands and a thousand eyes, complete and perfect."

Having made this vow, immediately upon my body manifested a thousand hands and a thousand eyes, all perfectly complete; the great earth in the ten directions trembled in six ways; the thousand buddhas of the ten directions all emitted radiant light, illuminating and touching my body, and illuminating the boundless worlds of the ten directions.

From that time onward, in countless Buddha lands and at countless assemblies, I again heard this dhāraṇī, personally received and upheld it. Once more I gave rise to joy and boundless elation, thereby transcending countless hundreds of millions of kalpas of subtle birth and death. Since then, I have constantly recited and maintained it, never neglecting or forgetting it. Because of upholding this mantra, in all places of rebirth I have always been born before the Buddhas, appearing on lotus flowers by transformation, never receiving a womb-born body.

If there be bhikkhus, bhikkhunis, upāsakas, upāsikās, pure youths, or pure maidens who wish to recite and uphold it, they should first arouse a mind of compassion toward all sentient beings and make this vow from me:

Homage to the Greatly Compassionate Avalokiteśvara! May I swiftly know all dharmas.

Homage to the Greatly Compassionate Avalokiteśvara! May I soon obtain the eye of Wisdom.

Homage to the Greatly Compassionate Avalokiteśvara! May I swiftly deliver all beings.

Homage to the Greatly Compassionate Avalokiteśvara! May I soon attain skillful means.

Homage to the Greatly Compassionate Avalokiteśvara! May I swiftly board the boat of Prajñā.

Homage to the Greatly Compassionate Avalokiteśvara! May I soon cross over the sea of suffering.

Homage to the Greatly Compassionate Avalokiteśvara! May I swiftly attain the path of precepts and meditation.

Homage to the Greatly Compassionate Avalokiteśvara! May I soon ascend the mountain of Nirvāṇa.

Homage to the Greatly Compassionate Avalokiteśvara! May I swiftly reach the unconditioned abode.

Homage to the Greatly Compassionate Avalokiteśvara! May I soon unite with the Dharmadhātu body.

"If I face the mountain of blades, the mountain of blades crumbles of itself. If I face the boiling cauldron, the boiling cauldron is extinguished of itself. If I face the hells, the hells dry up of themselves. If I face the hungry ghosts, the hungry ghosts are satisfied of themselves. If I face the asuras, their malice is subdued of itself. If I face the animals, they attain great Wisdom of themselves."

Having made this vow, with utmost sincerity recite my name, and also single-mindedly contemplate my original teacher, Amitābha Tathāgata. Then you should recite this dhāraṇī divine mantra. Reciting it fully five times in one night will eradicate from your body the grave offenses of birth and death accumulated over hundreds of thousands of millions of kalpas.

The Bodhisattva Avalokiteśvara (Guanyin) again addressed the Buddha, saying: "World-Honored One, if any human or celestial being recites and upholds the verses of the Great Compassion Dhāraṇī, at the time of their approaching death, all buddhas of the ten directions will come to extend their hands. To whichever buddha-land they wish to be born, according to their aspiration they shall all attain rebirth."

Again he addressed the Buddha, saying: “World-Honored One! If any sentient beings who recite and uphold the Great Compassion Mantra should fall into the three evil paths, I vow not to attain perfect enlightenment.

If any who recite and uphold the Great Compassion Mantra are not reborn in the lands of the Buddhas, I vow not to attain perfect enlightenment.

For those who recite and uphold the Great Compassion Mantra, if they do not attain immeasurable samādhi and eloquence, I vow not to attain perfect enlightenment.

Those who recite and uphold the Great Compassion Mantra, if any of their wishes in this present life are not fulfilled, then it cannot be called the Great Compassion Heart Dharani. The only exceptions are for those who harbor ill intent, and for those who lack utmost sincerity.

If there are women who despise and loathe their female form and wish to attain a male body, let them recite and uphold the verses of the Great Compassion Dhāraṇī. Should they not transform their female body into a male one, I vow not to attain perfect enlightenment. Those who harbor even the slightest doubt will certainly not achieve this fruition.

"If there are sentient beings who have encroached upon or damaged the permanent assets of the monastic community, such as food, drink, or wealth, even if a thousand Buddhas appear in the world, they cannot obtain purification through confession; even if they confess, such offenses cannot be eradicated. But now, by reciting the Great Compassion Mantra, these offenses can be completely eradicated. If one has encroached upon or consumed the food, drink, or wealth belonging to the permanent assets of the monastic community, one must confess and repent before the teachers of the ten directions before these offenses can be removed. Now, when reciting the Great Compassion Dhāraṇī, the teachers of the ten directions will immediately arrive to bear witness, and all sinful obstructions will be entirely eliminated. All ten evil deeds, the five heinous crimes, slandering others, slandering the Dharma, breaking the precepts of fasting, violating precepts, destroying stūpas, damaging monasteries, stealing the property of the Saṅgha, defiling pure and noble conduct—all such evil deeds and grave offenses will be completely extinguished. Except for one thing: if one gives rise to doubt toward this mantra, then even minor offenses and light karma cannot be eradicated, let alone grave offenses. Although grave offenses may not be immediately eradicated, they will still become a distant cause for Bodhi."

Once more he addressed the Buddha, saying:

O Bhagavān! If humans and devas recite and uphold the Great Compassion Mantra, they shall obtain fifteen kinds of auspicious rebirths and will not suffer fifteen kinds of untimely deaths. These untimely deaths are: first, they will not die from starvation or extreme hardship. Second, they will not die from imprisonment, shackles, or beating. Third, they will not die at the hands of enemies or adversaries. Fourth, they will not die slain in battle or military conflict. Fifth, they will not die from being mauled by wolves, jackals, or fierce beasts. Sixth, they will not die from the venom of poisonous snakes, serpents, or scorpions. Seventh, they will not die from being burned by fire or drowned in water. Eighth, they will not die from poisoning. Ninth, they will not die from gu sorcery. Tenth, they will not die from madness or loss of mindfulness. Eleventh, they will not die from falling from mountains, trees, or cliffs. Twelfth, they will not die from the evil spells of wicked people. Thirteenth, they will not die from being seized by malevolent spirits or evil ghosts. Fourteenth, they will not die from the affliction of severe illness. Fifteenth, they will not die from harming themselves without due cause. Those who recite and uphold the Great Compassion Mantra will not meet with such fifteen kinds of untimely death.

"Obtaining fifteen kinds of fortunate births: First, wherever one is born, one will always encounter virtuous kings. Second, one will always be born in virtuous lands. Third, one will always encounter favorable times. Fourth, one will always meet virtuous friends. Fifth, one's physical faculties will always be complete. Sixth, one's aspiration for the Path will become pure and mature. Seventh, one will not violate the precepts. Eighth, all one's family and companions will be harmonious and devoted through kindness and duty. Ninth, one's resources, wealth, and sustenance will always be abundant and sufficient. Tenth, one will constantly receive respect, support, and assistance from others. Eleventh, all one's treasures and wealth will be free from robbery or seizure by others. Twelfth, whatever one wishes and seeks will all be accomplished according to one's aspirations. Thirteenth, dragon kings and virtuous deities will constantly guard and protect one. Fourteenth, wherever one is born, one will see the Buddha and hear the Dharma. Fifteenth, the Right Dharma one hears will enable one to realize its profound meaning. If there are those who recite and uphold the Great Compassionate Heart Dhāraṇī, they will obtain these fifteen kinds of fortunate births. All devas and humans should constantly recite and uphold it, without giving rise to laziness."

When the Bodhisattva Avalokiteśvara had spoken these words, before the entire assembly, he joined his palms together and stood composed. With great compassionate heart toward all sentient beings, his countenance opened into a gentle smile, and he then proclaimed this "Vast, Perfect, Unobstructed Great Compassion Heart-Dhāraṇī, the Divine and Wondrous Verses of the Dhāraṇī," saying:

When the Bodhisattva Avalokiteśvara had spoken this mantra, the great earth shook in six ways, and celestial jewels and flowers rained down in profusion. All the buddhas of the ten directions rejoiced; the celestial demons and non-Buddhist paths were terrified, their hair standing on end. All beings in the assembly attained the fruit of realization. Some attained the fruit of Stream-enterer, some the fruit of Once-returner, some the fruit of Non-returner, and some the fruit of Arhat. Some attained the first, second, third, fourth, or fifth ground, up to the tenth ground. Countless beings gave rise to the mind of Bodhi.

Then, the Great Brahma Heavenly King rose from his seat, adjusted his robes, joined his palms respectfully, and addressed the Bodhisattva Avalokiteśvara (Guanyin), saying: "Excellent, Great Being! Since times of old, I have attended countless assemblies of Buddhas, hearing various teachings and various dhāraṇīs, yet never have I heard of such an unobstructed Great Compassionate Heart and the wondrous verses of the Great Compassion Dhāraṇī. I earnestly beseech you, Great Being, to describe for me the form and characteristics of this dhāraṇī. All of us in the great assembly long to hear it with reverence and joy!"

The Bodhisattva Avalokiteśvara addressed Lord Brahmā, saying: “You have asked in this manner for the sake of skillfully benefiting all sentient beings. Now listen well, and I shall briefly speak a little for your sake.”

The Bodhisattva Avalokiteśvara said: "The mind of great compassion is this; the mind of equality is this; the unconditioned mind is this; the mind free from attachment is this; the mind contemplating emptiness is this; the mind of reverence is this; the humble mind is this; the undisturbed mind is this; the mind free from grasping at views is this; the unsurpassed mind of bodhi is this. Know that such minds as these are the very marks of the dhāraṇī. You should rely upon this and practice accordingly."

The Great Brahma King said, "We, the great assembly, now for the first time recognize the form and features of this dhāraṇī. From this day forward, we shall uphold and practice it, never daring to forget or lose it."

Avalokiteśvara replied:

If a virtuous man or woman recites and upholds this divine mantra, they should arouse the vast Bodhi mind and vow to liberate all sentient beings. They should maintain the precepts and observe pure conduct, and toward all sentient beings, give rise to a mind of equality. They should constantly recite this mantra, never allowing it to cease. They should dwell in a pure chamber, bathe to be clean, and wear clean clothes. They should hang banners, light lamps, and offer incense, flowers, and the finest food and drink as offerings. With the mind concentrated in one place, free from other distractions, they should recite and uphold it according to the Dharma.

At that time, there shall be the Bodhisattvas Sunlight and Moonlight, along with innumerable divine immortals, who will come to bear witness and increase the efficacy. I shall then illuminate with a thousand eyes and protect with a thousand hands. From that time onward, all worldly scriptures shall be able to be upheld and retained; all non-Buddhist arts and techniques, as well as the Vedas and other texts, shall also be thoroughly mastered. For one who recites and upholds this divine mantra, all eighty-four thousand kinds of illnesses in the world shall be cured, with none remaining unhealed. One shall also be able to command all spirits and ghosts, subdue the celestial demons, and restrain the non-Buddhist practitioners. If, while dwelling in mountain wildernesses, reciting sutras or practicing seated meditation, one is disturbed and harassed by various mountain spirits, miscellaneous sprites, wraiths, ghosts, or deities, causing the mind to become unsettled, upon reciting this mantra once, all such spirits and ghosts shall be bound.

If one is able to recite and uphold this accordingly, and toward all sentient beings gives rise to a mind of compassion, I shall then command all virtuous spirits, dragon kings, and adamantine hidden ones to constantly follow, guard, and protect them, never leaving their side, protecting them as one protects one’s own eyes, as one protects one’s own life.

These virtuous deities, dragon kings, and divine mothers, each with five hundred retinues, along with mighty yakṣas, constantly follow and protect those who recite and uphold the Great Compassion Mantra. If such a person dwells in empty mountains or vast wilderness, sleeping alone in solitude, these virtuous deities will take turns keeping watch through the night, warding off calamities and obstacles. If one is lost on mountain paths, by reciting this mantra, virtuous deities and dragon kings will manifest as good people to show the right way. If in mountain forests or open wilds one lacks water or fire, through the protection of dragon kings, water and fire will be manifested.

The Bodhisattva Avalokiteśvara further spoke to the reciters this verse for dispelling calamities and bestowing cool tranquility:

If one travels through wilderness or mountain marshes, And encounters tigers, wolves, or other fierce beasts, Serpents, spirits, goblins, and demonic ghosts— Hearing this mantra recited, none can bring harm.

If one journeys upon rivers, lakes, or vast seas, Where venomous dragons, flood dragons, and makara monsters dwell, Yakṣas, rākṣasas, fish, turtles, and giant turtles— Hearing this mantra recited, they hide themselves away.

If surrounded by armies or bandits in battle array, Or robbed of wealth and goods by evil people, Sincerely recite the Great Compassion Mantra, And they will give rise to compassion, returning what was taken.

If arrested by officials and imprisoned, Confined behind bars, shackled and locked, Sincerely recite the Great Compassion Mantra, And the authorities will show mercy, releasing you to return.

If entering a household of wild paths or poison spells, Where food and drink contain poison meant to harm, Sincerely recite the Great Compassion Mantra, And the poison will transform into sweet dew.

When a woman suffers difficult labor, Tormented by obstructive demonic hindrances, Sincerely recite the Great Compassion Mantra, And ghosts and spirits will retreat, granting safe and joyful birth.

When evil dragons and pestilent ghosts spread poisonous vapors, And feverish illness assails, life nearing its end, Wholeheartedly recite the Great Compassion Mantra, And the epidemic will vanish, lifespan prolonged.

When dragon-ghosts spread various toxic swellings, Boils, sores, pus, and blood, pains unbearable, Wholeheartedly recite the Great Compassion Mantra, And with three spits, the poison-swelling dissolves at once.

When sentient beings, defiled and evil, give rise to unwholesomeness, Employing curses and sorcery, forming enmity and grudges, Wholeheartedly recite the Great Compassion Mantra, And the sorcery will revert upon the one who cast it.

In evil ages of turbidity, when the Dharma nears extinction, When lustful fire blazes and minds are deluded and inverted, Abandoning spouses, craving outward defilement, Day and night with wicked thoughts, without a moment’s pause— If one can recite the Great Compassion Mantra, Lustful fire will cease and wicked thoughts be removed.

If I were to broadly praise this mantra’s power, Even an eon of praising would not exhaust its merits.

At that time, the Bodhisattva Avalokiteśvara (Guanyin) addressed the Brahma Deva, saying:

Recite this mantra five times, take a five-colored cord to make a string, recite the mantra twenty-one times, tie it into twenty-one knots, and fasten it around the neck.

This dhāraṇī was spoken by past Buddhas as numerous as the sands of ninety-nine billion Ganges Rivers. All those Buddhas proclaimed it for the sake of practitioners who cultivate the six pāramitās, in order to swiftly bring to fulfillment those whose practice is not yet complete, and to swiftly arouse the bodhi mind in those who have not yet generated it. If śrāvakas have not yet attained the fruits, it will swiftly enable them to realize the fruits.

If within the three-thousandfold great chiliocosm, there are gods, immortals, or human beings who have not yet aroused the supreme Bodhi-mind, may they be caused to swiftly arouse that mind. For any sentient beings who have not yet attained the roots of faith in the Great Vehicle, may it be through the majestic spiritual power of this Dhāraṇī that their seeds of the Great Vehicle and sprouts of Dharma are caused to grow and increase. Through my skillful means and compassionate power, may all that they require be accomplished for them.

If throughout the three thousand great thousand worlds, in all the hidden, dark, and obscure places, the beings of the three wretched paths hear this mantra of mine, they shall all be liberated from suffering. For any bodhisattvas who have not yet attained the first abode, may they swiftly attain it, and even cause them to attain the ten abodes. Furthermore, may they reach the Buddha-ground, and spontaneously accomplish the thirty-two major marks and the eighty subsidiary characteristics of excellence.

If a śrāvaka hears this dhāraṇī, even once, or cultivates and transcribes this dhāraṇī, and with an upright heart dwells in accordance with the Dharma, the four fruits of śramaṇa will be attained without seeking.

If within the great trichiliocosm, the mountains, rivers, rocks, and cliffs, the waters of the four great oceans could be made to surge and boil; if Mount Sumeru and the Iron Ring Mountains could be made to tremble and shake, and further be shattered into fine dust, and all the beings therein could be caused to arouse the unsurpassed Bodhi mind.

If sentient beings seek fulfillment of their wishes in this present life, they should, for twenty-one days, purely observe the precepts and maintain a vegetarian diet, reciting this dhāraṇī. Their wishes will certainly be fulfilled. From the beginning of the cycle of birth and death to its end, all evil karma will be entirely extinguished. Within the great trichiliocosm, all Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, Brahmā, Śakra, the Four Heavenly Kings, divine immortals, and dragon kings will all bear witness and know.

If any human or celestial being recites and upholds this dhāraṇī, when such a person bathes in rivers, lakes, or seas, the beings therein who come into contact with the water touched by this person's body—all their evil karma and grave offenses will be entirely eradicated. They will then be reborn in other pure lands, transforming into life from lotus flowers, free from the womb-born, moisture-born, or egg-born forms. How much more so for one who upholds, recites, and chants it?

If one who recites and upholds this sutra walks upon the road, and a great wind arises in time, blowing upon this person's body, hair, and garments, while the remaining wind passes onward—all classes of sentient beings who are touched by the wind that has swept over this person's body, their every grave transgression and evil karma will be entirely extinguished and eradicated. They will no longer receive retribution in the three evil destinies, and will constantly be reborn before the Buddhas.

Know this: the merits, blessings, and karmic rewards of upholding and maintaining this dhāraṇī are inconceivable. For one who recites and holds this dhāraṇī, all sounds uttered by the mouth—whether wholesome or unwholesome—are heard by all celestial demons, non-Buddhist paths, heavenly dragons, ghosts, and spirits as pure Dharma sounds. Toward that person they all give rise to a mind of reverence and respect, honoring them as they would the Buddha.

Those who recite and uphold this dhāraṇī should know that such a person is the treasury of the Buddha-body, cherished by ninety-nine koṭis of Buddhas as numerous as the sands of the Ganges. They should know that such a person is the treasury of light, illumined by the radiance of all Tathāgatas. They should know that such a person is the treasury of compassion, ever using the dhāraṇī to rescue sentient beings. They should know that such a person is the treasury of wondrous Dharma, universally gathering all gates of dhāraṇīs. They should know that such a person is the treasury of meditation, with hundreds of thousands of samādhis constantly manifesting before them. They should know that such a person is the treasury of emptiness, ever contemplating sentient beings with the wisdom of emptiness. They should know that such a person is the treasury of fearlessness, constantly protected by dragons, devas, and virtuous spirits. They should know that such a person is the treasury of sublime speech, with the sound of the dhāraṇī never ceasing from their mouth. They should know that such a person is the treasury of permanence, unshaken by the three calamities and evil aeons. They should know that such a person is the treasury of liberation, never detained by celestial demons or external paths. They should know that such a person is the treasury of the Medicine King, ever using the dhāraṇī to heal the illnesses of sentient beings. They should know that such a person is the treasury of spiritual powers, freely traveling through Buddha-lands. The merit of such a person is beyond all praise.

Virtuous man! If there is one who, weary of the suffering of the world, seeks the joy of long life, let him in a secluded and pure place, with purified boundaries, consecrate his garments. Whether water, food, incense, or medicine, let him consecrate each one hundred and eight times and partake of it; he shall surely attain longevity.

If one can properly establish the boundary and receive and uphold it according to the Dharma, all accomplishments will be attained. The method for establishing the boundary is as follows: take a knife, recite the mantra twenty‑one times, and draw a line on the ground to form the boundary. Or take pure water, recite the mantra twenty‑one times, and sprinkle it toward the four directions to form the boundary. Or take white mustard seeds, recite the mantra twenty‑one times, and scatter them toward the four directions to form the boundary. Or use the extent of one’s thought as the boundary. Or take pure ash, recite the mantra twenty‑one times to form the boundary. Or recite the mantra over a five‑colored cord twenty‑one times and encircle the area on all four sides to form the boundary. All these methods are effective.

If one is able to receive and uphold it according to the Dharma, the fruit of attainment will naturally be achieved. Even merely hearing the name of this dhāraṇī eradicates immeasurable kalpas of grave offenses of birth and death—how much more so for those who recite and uphold it? Those who obtain and recite this divine mantra should know that such a person has already made offerings to immeasurable buddhas and extensively planted wholesome roots.

If one can relieve the suffering and hardship of all sentient beings, and recite and uphold this Dharma accordingly, it should be known that such a person is endowed with great compassion. They will attain Buddhahood before long. For all beings they encounter, they will recite it, causing them to hear it with their ears, thereby creating for them a cause for Bodhi. The merit of such a person is immeasurable and boundless, beyond all praise.

If one can devote oneself with utmost sincerity, uphold the pure precepts of fasting, repent on behalf of all sentient beings for the transgressions of past karma, and also repent for the immeasurable kalpas of various evil deeds, while continuously reciting this dhāraṇī with unwavering voice—the four fruits of śrāvakas can be attained in this very life. For those of sharp faculties and wisdom who contemplate with skillful means, even the ten stages of bodhisattvahood can be achieved without difficulty, let alone the minor worldly blessings and rewards. All prayers and aspirations will be fulfilled accordingly.

Should one wish to summon spirits, take a wild skull and cleanse it thoroughly. Before the Thousand-Eyed One's image, establish an altar. With various incenses, flowers, food, and drink make offerings to it. If this is done daily for seven days, the spirit will surely appear in visible form, ready to follow commands.

If one wishes to summon the Four Heavenly Kings, one should chant the mantra over sandalwood and burn it.

"Due to the profound depth of this Bodhisattva's great compassionate vows, and also due to the vast and mighty spiritual power of this dhāraṇī."

The Buddha said to Ānanda:

If in any land, calamities arise, the king of that land, if he governs the nation with righteous Dharma, treats his people with leniency, does no injustice to sentient beings, pardons those who have committed faults, and for seven days and seven nights with utmost diligence of body and mind recites and upholds this Great Compassionate Heart Dhāraṇī Mantra, then all calamities in that land will be entirely eradicated, the five grains will flourish abundantly, and the myriad people will dwell in peace and happiness.

Moreover, if a country is repeatedly invaded and harassed by foreign enemies, causing the people to be unsettled, ministers to plot rebellion, epidemics to spread, floods and droughts to occur irregularly, and the sun and moon to lose their proper courses—when such various calamities arise, one should create an image of the Thousand-Eyed Great Compassionate Mind, facing west, and with all kinds of fragrant flowers, banners, jeweled canopies, or a hundred-flavored food and drink, offer sincere worship. The king should also, for seven days and seven nights, with body and mind diligently persevere, reciting and upholding these wondrous verses of the dhāraṇī. Then the foreign enemies will submit of their own accord, each returning to govern their own lands without mutual disturbance or harm; the nations will communicate and unite, with compassionate hearts turned toward one another. The princes and all officials will act with loyalty and sincerity; the consorts, queens, and court ladies will be reverent and filial toward the king. The dragons, spirits, and deities will protect and guard that country. Rains will fall in due season, fruits and grains will be abundant and plentiful, and the people will be joyful and content.

Moreover, if within a household there arises severe illness, numerous ominous disturbances manifest, ghosts, spirits, evil demons, and devious spirits bring chaos to the home, wicked people recklessly spread slander and plot harm, and the family members, young and old, inside and outside, cannot live in harmony—one should, before an image of the Thousand-Eyed Great Compassion, set up an altar, and with utmost sincerity recite the name of Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva. Chant this dhāraṇī to the full count of a thousand times, and all such evil matters as described above will be completely eradicated, and lasting peace and stability will be attained.

Ananda addressed the Buddha, saying: “World-Honored One, what is the name of this mantra? How should one receive and uphold it?”

One name: Dhāraṇī that Prolongs Life. One name: Dhāraṇī that Extinguishes Evil Destinies. One name: Dhāraṇī that Shatters Evil Karmic Obstructions. One name: Dhāraṇī that Fulfills Vows. One name: Dhāraṇī of Following the Heart's Freedom. One name: Dhāraṇī that Swiftly Surpasses the Higher Grounds. Thus should it be upheld."

Ananda addressed the Buddha, saying: “World-Honored One, what is the name of this bodhisattva mahasattva who skillfully proclaims such a dharani?”

The Buddha said:

This bodhisattva is named 'Avalokiteśvara, the Sovereign of Hearing the Sounds of the World,' also named 'Holder of the Noose,' and also named 'Thousand-Rayed Eyes.'

"O virtuous one! This Bodhisattva Avalokiteśvara possesses inconceivable majestic spiritual power. In past immeasurable kalpas, He has already attained Buddhahood, bearing the title 'Thus Come One of Right Dharma Brightness.' Through the power of His great compassionate vows, and for the sake of inspiring all bodhisattvas, bringing peace and happiness, and maturing all sentient beings, He manifests in the form of a bodhisattva."

All of you in the great assembly—the great bodhisattvas, brahmā gods, śakras, dragon spirits, and deities—should revere this with respect and give rise to no contempt or arrogance. All humans and devas should constantly make offerings. By single‑mindedly reciting the sacred name, one will obtain immeasurable merit, eradicate immeasurable transgressions, and at life’s end be reborn in the land of Amitābha Buddha.

The Bodhisattva Sunlight, for those who uphold the Great Compassion Heart Dhāraṇī, proclaims a great divine mantra to protect them:

Namo Buddha Namo Dharma, the Great Truth Namo Sangha, the assembly of monks Reverently I bow to the Three Jewels

Recite this mantra, and all sins shall be extinguished; it can also repel demons and dispel heavenly calamities.

If one recites this mantra once and makes one prostration to the Buddha, and if one thus recites the mantra and makes prostrations three times daily, then in future lifetimes, in whatever body one receives, one will obtain in each and every case a handsome and pleasing appearance, a delightful karmic reward.

The Moonlight Bodhisattva likewise, for the sake of all practitioners, speaks a dhāraṇī mantra to protect and uphold them:

Shendi Ditu Su Zha Arunamiti Wudu Zha Shenqi Zha Bolai Di Yemi Ruo Zha Wudu Zha Juluo Di Zha Qimo Zha Suo Po He

Recite this mantra five times, take five-colored threads, fashion them into a mantra cord, and bind it upon the afflicted area.

This mantra was spoken by Buddhas numbering as many as the sands of forty Ganges rivers in the past, and I now also speak it. It is to provide protection for all practitioners, to remove all obstacles and hardships, to dispel all malignant illnesses and pains, to accomplish all virtuous dharmas, and to distance them from all fears.

The Buddha said to Ananda:

You should wholeheartedly and with a purified mind receive and uphold this dhāraṇī, widely proclaiming and spreading it throughout Jambudvīpa, ensuring it never ceases.

This dhāraṇī can greatly benefit all beings of the three realms. For all who are afflicted by suffering and bound by illness, if they are treated with this dhāraṇī, there is none who will not be healed.

This great divine mantra, when chanted over withered trees, can still cause them to grow branches, leaves, flowers, and fruit—how much more so for sentient beings endowed with consciousness? If there are those with bodily illnesses who, after applying this remedy, do not recover—such a thing is impossible.

"O virtuous ones! The power of this dhāraṇī is inconceivable! Inconceivable! Its marvels cannot be fully expressed. Unless one has planted extensive roots of goodness since the distant past, one cannot even hear its name, much less behold it. All of you in this great assembly—gods, humans, nāgas, and spirits—hearing my praise, should rejoice accordingly."

If anyone slanders this mantra, they slander the ninety-nine koṭis of Buddhas as numerous as the sands of the Ganges. If toward this dhāraṇī one gives rise to doubt and fails to believe, know that such a person will forever forfeit great benefit, and for hundreds of thousands of millions of kalpas will constantly sink into the evil destinies, with no time of escape, ever failing to see the Buddha, to hear the Dharma, or to behold the Sangha.

All the assemblies of Bodhisattva-Mahāsattvas, the Vajra Secret Guardians, the gods of Brahmā and Śakra, the Four Heavenly Kings, dragons, spirits, and ghosts, hearing the Thus-Come One praise this Dhāraṇī, rejoiced in full accord and undertook to practice in accordance with the teaching.
