Buddha Speaks the Dharani Sutra for Protecting All Children
Translated by Bodhiruci, Indian Tripitaka Master of the Northern Wei Dynasty
At that time, the Tathagata had just attained perfect enlightenment, when a great Brahma king approached the Buddha. He reverently bowed at the Buddha's feet and said:
I take refuge in the Buddha, I take refuge in the Dharma, I take refuge in the Sangha.
I bow to the World-Honored Buddha, the Great Dharma King who illuminates the world, who first proclaimed the divine mantra in Jambudvīpa— the sublime Dharma of pure nectar— and I bow to the liberated Sangha.
Having bowed at the feet of the Sage, I now speak these verses:
"World-Honored Ones, all Tathāgatas, Śrāvakas and Pratyekabuddhas, immortal sages, world-protecting kings, mighty dragons, devas, and spirits— all such beings are born among humans.
Yet there are yakṣas and rākṣasas who delight in devouring human embryos, unrestrained by kings or mortal power. They cause people to be childless, harming the womb and the unborn, confusing the minds of men and women in union, preventing conception from taking hold.
Whether through miscarriage, stillbirth, or stealing life at the moment of birth— all such harm and disturbance are wrought by these evil spirits.
I shall now recite their names— may the Buddha permit me to speak."

These fifteen ghostly spirits, appearing in such forms to frighten children, and the terrified reactions of the children, I have now fully described. There is also a great ghost-king, named Chandana Gandharva, who is the foremost among all ghostly beings. You should take a five-colored thread and, while reciting this dhāraṇī once, tie one knot. Make one hundred and eight knots in total, and also write down the names of these ghostly spirits. Have a messenger carry this written thread and say to them: "Now go swiftly, as fast as the wind, to the four directions. Wherever those fifteen ghostly spirits dwell, together with the great ghost-king Chandana Gandharva, bind those spirits with the five-colored thread, so they do not disturb living beings." Additionally, offer the divine king various delicious foods and drinks, fragrant flowers, lamps, and milk porridge as offerings.
At that time, the Great Brahma Heavenly King again addressed the Buddha, saying: "World-Honored One! If there are women who cannot bear children, or whose pregnancies miscarry or are lost, or whose children die after birth—these women, if they wish to seek offspring, protect life, and attain longevity, should always focus their minds, cultivate good practices, and on the eighth and fifteenth days of the lunar month observe the Eight Precepts. They should bathe in purity, wear fresh clean clothes, pay homage to the Buddhas of the ten directions, and at midnight, place a few mustard seeds upon their heads while reciting the dhāraṇī mantra I will speak. This will enable these women to fulfill their wishes, and the children they bear will be safe and free from harm, living out their full lifespan without premature death. If any spirits or ghosts do not comply with my mantra, I will cause their heads to split into seven pieces like the branches of an ari tree." Then he spoke the Dhāraṇī Mantra for Protecting All Children:
OṂ, the great one, the noble one, the conqueror of all, The subduer of all, the tamer of all, The one who overcomes all obstacles, The destroyer of all afflictions, The protector of all beings, The one who grants peace and liberation, The one who bestows blessings and auspiciousness, So be it.
"World-Honored One, I now speak this dharani incantation to protect all children, so that they may dwell in peace and obtain long life."
At that time, the World-Honored One, possessing all-knowing wisdom, spoke this mantra:
Oṃ, buddha buddha, buddha bodhisattva. Bodhi bodhi, māre, śikṣāya, vaśāri, vadhane varada. Dhāre dhāre, vajra dhāre, śamani śuddhe, vahani dāpaṇi, svāhāni varani svāhā.
These fifteen malevolent spirits, who constantly feed on flesh and blood, will all be driven far away by the power of this Dharani mantra, their evil intentions extinguished. They will cause no harm, allowing children to be free from fear and live in safety and peace, free from misfortune both in the womb and from birth. Those who recite this mantra, whether in cities, towns, or villages, wherever they dwell, will also ensure that infants and young children grow up in safety, protected throughout their lives. Homage to the Buddha, who perfected this mantra, guarding all children from being harmed by evil spirits, keeping them far from all calamities and all terrors. Svaha. Upon hearing this sutra, the Brahma Deity rejoiced and undertook to practice it.
