Thus have I heard:
Once, the Buddha was staying in the Jeta Grove, in the garden of Anathapindika, near the city of Shravasti.
At that time, the World-Honored One said to the monks: "Practice one thing; widely spread one thing. This will lead to spiritual powers, remove all distracting thoughts, attain the fruit of the contemplative life, and reach nirvana. What is that one thing? It is mindfulness of death. You should practice it well, explain it widely, and then you will achieve spiritual powers, eliminate scattered thoughts, gain the fruit of a recluse, and attain nirvana. Therefore, monks, practice this one thing; widely teach it. Thus, monks, you should train yourselves in this way."
At that time, all the monks heard what the Buddha had taught, rejoiced, and faithfully put it into practice.

「『「於今我首上, 已生衰耗毛;
"Hair has grown grey on my head—the divine messenger has come. It is time now to renounce the household life and seek wisdom."
"'Longevity King spoke to his eldest son, Good Sight: "Do you know that white hairs have appeared on my head? I wish to shave my head and beard, don the three robes, and with firm faith in the truth, leave home to pursue the path, thus freeing myself from all suffering. You shall inherit my throne, govern by the Dharma, and let nothing be lost. Do not go against my teachings or act like an ordinary person. For if anyone goes against my words, they walk the path of the ordinary. And ordinary people remain long trapped in the three lower realms and eight difficult states." At that time, King Longevity practiced the holy life well for eighty-four thousand years, cultivating the four immeasurable minds — loving-kindness, compassion, joy, and equanimity. Upon the end of his life, he was reborn in the Brahma heavens. Then, Prince Good Sight kept his father's teachings in mind, never forgetting them for a moment. He governed by the Dharma and was without any crookedness.'
