Thus have I heard:
Once, the Buddha was staying in the Jeta Grove, in the garden of Anathapindika, near the city of Shravasti.
At that time, the Blessed One told the monks: "Practice one thing, and widely share one thing. When you practice that one thing, you will gain a good reputation, achieve great merit, all virtues will come to you, you will taste the nectar of the teaching, reach the unconditioned state, develop spiritual powers, eliminate all distracted thoughts, attain the fruit of a contemplative, and realize Nirvana yourself. What is that one thing? It is called 'mindfulness of the Sangha.'"
The Buddha told the monks: "How does one cultivate mindfulness of the Sangha so that there is good reputation, great rewards, all virtues arrive, the taste of deathless nectar is attained, the unconditioned state is reached, spiritual powers are achieved, scattered thoughts are eliminated, the fruit of a renunciant is obtained, and Nirvana is realized?"
The World-Honored One said: "If a monk sits in full lotus posture with his body and mind upright, his attention fixed before him, with no other thoughts, concentrating with single-minded focus on the Sangha—the disciple community—he will realize its true nature.
The noble disciples of the Tathagata are accomplished in wholesome actions, upright in character, and follow what is proper. They engage in no unwholesome deeds. They harmonize with one another, superior and inferior alike, and perfect every teaching.
The noble Sangha of the Tathagata is accomplished in ethical discipline, accomplished in meditative concentration, accomplished in wisdom, accomplished in liberation, and accomplished in the knowledge and vision of liberation.
This noble Sangha consists of four pairs of persons—eight types of individuals. This is the noble Sangha of the Tathagata, worthy of respect, veneration, offerings, and honor. Why? Because it is a field of merit for the world.
Within this community, all share the same vessel of practice. They have saved themselves and also lead others to the three vehicles of liberation. Such a community is called the noble Sangha.
Therefore, monks, if you recollect the Sangha, you will gain a good reputation, reap great rewards, attain all wholesome qualities, taste the nectar of the Dharma, reach the unconditioned state, develop spiritual powers, dispel all distracting thoughts, realize the fruits of the contemplative life, and attain final Nirvāṇa.
Thus, monks, always maintain this mindfulness of the Sangha, never abandoning it, and you will obtain these wholesome virtues. Accordingly, monks, you should train yourselves in this way."
