> Chapter 1

> This is what I heard:

> Once, the Buddha was staying in the Jeta Grove, Anathapindika's Park, in the city of Shravasti.

> At that time, the World-Honored One addressed the monks: "You should cultivate one practice, you should widely spread one practice. Having cultivated this one practice, having widely spread this one practice, you will attain spiritual powers, all activities will become tranquil, you will attain the fruits of the ascetic life, and reach the realm of Nirvana. What is this one practice? It is called the practice of non-negligence. What is the practice of non-negligence? It is the guarding of the mind. How does one guard the mind? Thus, O monks! Constantly guard the mind regarding that which is with outflows and regarding things that are with outflows. When one thus guards the mind regarding that which is with outflows and regarding things that are with outflows, one will find joy in the things that are with outflows. One will also have faith and delight, abide without wavering, constantly concentrate one's attention, and encourage oneself through one's own effort."

> "Indeed, O monk! He who is free from negligence and ever mindful, will prevent unarisen sensual defilements from arising, and will eradicate arisen sensual defilements. He will prevent unarisen defilements of existence from arising, and will eradicate arisen defilements of existence. He will prevent unarisen defilements of ignorance from arising, and will eradicate arisen defilements of ignorance. O monk, dwelling in solitude with diligence and constant self-awareness, he finds joy in liberation. His mind is freed from sensual defilements, freed from defilements of existence, freed from defilements of ignorance. Being freed, he attains the knowledge of freedom. He knows clearly: 'Birth is exhausted, the holy life has been fulfilled, what had to be done has been done, there is no more returning to this state of existence.'"

> Then, the World-Honored One spoke this verse:

> Without arrogance, you walk the path of nectar; Carelessness is the road to death. The humble do not die; The proud are already dead.

> Therefore, monks, you should practice diligently and without negligence. In this way, monks, you should train yourselves.

> Then, the monks, having heard what the Buddha taught, joyfully accepted and practiced it.
