> Chapter 7

> This is what I heard:

> At that time, the Buddha was in the Vulture Peak Mountain near the city of Rājagṛha, accompanied by five hundred great monks.

> At that time, the Venerable Subhuti was also dwelling in a hut by the side of Vulture Peak in the city of Rajagriha, practicing meditation in solitude. At that time, the Venerable Subhuti was afflicted by a severe and heavy physical illness. He then thought to himself, "Where does this pain of mine arise from? Where does it cease? And where does it go?" Then, the Venerable Subhuti spread his sitting mat in an open space, straightened his body, focused his mind, and sat in full lotus posture. With single-pointed concentration, he contemplated the sense bases, seeking to overcome his suffering.

> At that moment, Śakra, Lord of the Devas, knew what the Venerable Subhūti was thinking. He then addressed Pañcaśikha with a verse, saying:

> "Those who practice good deeds are free from all bonds, dwelling on Vulture Peak; Now they face great suffering, finding joy in emptiness and calm senses. Come quickly to inquire of his illness, to see the noble one's face; This brings immense blessings, no virtue greater than this."

> "Yes, Venerable One!" replied Bocha Xun.

> At that moment, the god Śakra, accompanied by five hundred celestial beings and the musician Pañcaśikha, vanished from the Heaven of the Thirty-Three and, in the time it takes a man to bend and stretch his arm, arrived at Vulture Peak Mountain. They appeared not far from the Venerable Subhūti, and Śakra said to Pañcaśikha with this verse:

> "Now you awaken to good deeds, delighting in the stillness of meditation. With a gentle and pure voice, I now call you forth from your seated contemplation."

> At that moment, upon hearing the words of Śakra Devānām Indra, Pañcaśikha tuned his crystal lute and went to where Subhūti was. Then he praised Subhūti with this verse:

> May all bonds be forever severed, with no remnants left, And all thoughts remain undistracted and clear. May all dust and defilements be completely purified, I pray you swiftly awaken from meditation. With a tranquil mind, cross the river of existence, Subdue demons and transcend all fetters. Your virtues are as vast as the ocean, I pray you swiftly rise from concentration. Eyes pure as lotus blossoms, Never stained by any impurity. For those without refuge, you become their refuge, Rise swiftly from the emptiness of concentration. Cross the four floods and attain the unconditioned, Skillfully understand the end of aging and sickness. Having escaped the calamities of conditioned existence, O Honored One, awaken from concentration in due time. Five hundred celestial beings above, And the Shakya clan themselves have come, Longing to behold the face of the Holy One, Awaken swiftly from the emptiness of concentration.

> At that time, the Venerable Subhuti rose from his seat and praised Papiyas, saying: "Excellent, Papiyas! Now your voice and the lute are in harmony, the lute and your voice are in harmony, with no distinction between them. Yet the lute's sound does not separate from the song's sound, and the song's sound does not separate from the lute's sound. Only when these two come together do they create wondrous music."

> At that time, Sakra, Lord of the Devas, went to the place of the Venerable Subhuti. He bowed with his head at the elder’s feet and sat to one side. Then Sakra said to Subhuti, “How is it that the suffering borne by wholesome karma increases or decreases? From where does this bodily illness arise? Does it arise from the body, or does it arise from the mind?”

> Then, the Venerable Subhuti said to Sakra, Lord of the Devas: "Excellent, Kaushika! Dharmas arise by themselves, and dharmas cease by themselves. Dharmas disturb one another, and dharmas settle by themselves. Just as, Kaushika, there is a poison, and there is also an antidote to that poison. So it is, Lord of the Devas: dharmas disturb one another, and dharmas settle by themselves. Dharmas can give rise to other dharmas. A black dharma is cured by a white dharma; a white dharma is cured by a black dharma. Lord of the Devas, the sickness of desire is cured by impurity; the sickness of anger is cured by loving-kindness; the sickness of ignorance is cured by wisdom. Thus, Sakra, Lord of the Devas, all that exists returns to emptiness: no self, no person, no life, no soul, no being, no individual, no form, no appearance, no male, no female. Just as, Sakra, Lord of the Devas, the wind destroys a great tree, and its branches and leaves wither and fall; as hail destroys the young sprouts, and flowers and fruits that have just bloomed wither without water; and as timely rain from heaven allows the sprouts to survive—so it is, Lord of the Devas: dharmas disturb one another, and dharmas settle themselves. The pain and distress I once suffered have now been removed, and I am free from suffering."

> At that time, the god Indra said to Subhuti, “I too have had sorrow and distress, but now, hearing this teaching, I am free from worry. My duties are many, and I must return to heaven. I have my own affairs, and the matters of the gods are also numerous.”

> At that moment, Subhuti said, "Now is the time. It is fitting to go now."

> At that moment, Indra, Lord of the Gods, rose from his seat, bowed at Subhuti's feet, circled him three times, and departed.

> At that moment, Venerable Subhuti then spoke this verse:

> The Compassionate One spoke these words, With all essentials fully expressed; The wise find peace and security, Hearing the Dharma, all afflictions rest.

> At that time, Sakra, Ruler of the Devas, having heard what the Venerable Subhūti had said, rejoiced and respectfully accepted it.
