聞如是：

> Thus have I heard:

一時，佛在舍衛國祇樹給孤獨園。

> Once, the Buddha was staying in the Jeta Grove, in the garden of Anathapindika, near the city of Shravasti.

爾時，世尊告諸比丘：「今有四人，聰明勇悍，博古明今，法法成就。云何為四？比丘多聞博古明今，在大眾中最為第一。比丘尼多聞博古明今，在大眾中最為第一，優婆塞多聞博古明今，在大眾中最為第一，優婆斯多聞博古明今，在大眾中最為第一。是謂，比丘！有此四人在大眾中最為第一。」

> At that time, the World-Honored One addressed the monks: "Now there are four kinds of people who are wise, bold, learned in the past and present, and accomplished in the Dharma. What are the four? A monk who is learned in the past and present and is foremost among the assembly. A nun who is learned in the past and present and is foremost among the assembly. A male lay practitioner who is learned in the past and present and is foremost among the assembly. A female lay practitioner who is learned in the past and present and is foremost among the assembly. Monks, these are the four people who are foremost among the assembly."

爾時，世尊便說此偈：

> At that time, the World-Honored One spoke this verse:

「勇悍無所畏， 多聞能說法，在眾為師子， 能除怯弱法。比丘戒成就， 比丘尼多聞，優婆塞有信， 優婆斯亦爾。在眾為第一， 若能和順眾，欲知此義者， 如日初出時。

> Brave and fearless, Well-learned, able to teach the Dharma, In the assembly, a lion among them, Dispelling all timidity and weakness. Monks who perfect the Precepts, Nuns who are deeply learned, Laymen endowed with Faith, And laywomen likewise. Foremost in the gathering, If one can harmonize the community, To understand this meaning, It is like the sun at its first rising.

「是故，諸比丘！當學博古明今，法法成就。如是，諸比丘！當作是學。」

> Therefore, monastics, you should strive to understand both the past and the present, perfecting the Dharma in every aspect. Thus, monastics, you should train yourselves in this way.

爾時，諸比丘聞佛所說，歡喜奉行。
