聞如是：

> Thus have I heard:

一時，佛在舍衛國祇樹給孤獨園。

> Once, the Buddha was staying in the Jeta Grove, in the garden of Anathapindika, near the city of Shravasti.

爾時，世尊告諸比丘：「承事禮佛有五事功德。云何為五？一者端正，二者好聲，三者多財饒寶，四者生長者家，五者身壞命終，生善處天上。所以然者，如來無與等也。如來有信、有戒、有聞、有慧、有善色成就，是故成就五功德。

> At that time, the World-Honored One addressed the monks: "There are five merits in serving and paying homage to the Buddha. What are the five? First, a handsome appearance; second, a pleasant voice; third, abundant wealth and treasures; fourth, being born into a noble family; fifth, after the body breaks and life ends, being reborn in a heavenly realm. Why is this so? Because the Tathagata has no equal. The Tathagata possesses faith, moral conduct, learning, wisdom, and perfect physical beauty. Therefore, these five merits are accomplished."

「復以何因緣禮佛而得端正？以見佛形像已，發歡喜心，以此因緣而得端正。復以何因緣得好音聲？以見如來形像已，三自稱號：南無如來、至真、等正覺，以此因緣得好音聲。復以何因緣多財饒寶？緣彼見如來而作大施，散華、然燈，及餘所施之物，以此因緣獲大財寶。復以何因緣生長者家？若見如來形已，心無染著，右膝著地，長跪叉手，至心禮佛，以此因緣生長者家。復以何因緣，身壞命終，生善處天上？諸佛世尊常法，諸有眾生，以五事因緣禮如來者，便生善處天上。是謂，比丘！有此五因緣禮佛功德。是故，諸比丘！若有善男子、善女人欲禮佛者，當求方便，成此五功德。如是，諸比丘！當作是學。」

> "What is the cause for being born handsome when paying respects to the Buddha? It is because, upon seeing an image of the Buddha, one feels joy in the heart—this is the cause for being born handsome. What is the cause for having a good voice? Upon seeing the image of the Thus Come One, one calls out three times, 'Homage to the Thus Come One, the True One, the Perfectly Awakened One'—this is the cause for a good voice. What is the cause for abundant wealth and treasures? Because upon seeing the Thus Come One, one makes great offerings, scattering flowers, lighting lamps, and giving other gifts—this is the cause for great wealth. What is the cause for being born into a wealthy family? Upon seeing the image of the Thus Come One, with a mind free from attachment, one kneels on the right knee, joins palms, and bows to the Buddha with wholehearted sincerity—this is the cause for being born into a wealthy family. What is the cause for, at the end of life, being reborn in a good realm in heaven? It is the constant way of the Buddhas, the World-Honored Ones, that all beings who pay respects to the Thus Come One with these five causes will be reborn in a good realm in heaven. This, monks, is the merit of paying respects to the Buddha through these five causes. Therefore, monks, if good men or good women wish to pay respects to the Buddha, they should seek skillful means to accomplish these five merits. Thus, monks, you should train yourselves in this way."

爾時，諸比丘聞佛所說，歡喜奉行。

> At that time, all the monks heard what the Buddha had taught, rejoiced, and faithfully put it into practice.
