Once upon a time there was a wealthy layman who always wished to see Manjushri. He held a great charity feast and prepared a high seat of honor. When all was ready, an old man appeared—extremely ugly, with mucus running from his eyes, discharge from his nose, and drool from his mouth. Seeing this man sitting in the high seat, the layman thought angrily, "Today I have prepared this high seat for an honored monk. Who are you to sit there?" So he grabbed him and pulled him down to the ground. After the feast, the layman lit lamps and burned incense at the temple, praying, "May the merit from this offering allow me to see Manjushri in this very life." Then he returned home, exhausted, and fell asleep. In a dream, someone spoke to him: "You wished to see Manjushri, and when you saw him, you did not recognize him. The ugly old man sitting in the high seat was Manjushri himself, yet you pulled him down. This happened not once, but seven times. You saw him and did not recognize him—how can you expect to see Manjushri?"

Therefore, when someone seeks the Bodhisattva path, they should treat all beings with equal kindness. For when a person seeks enlightenment, Manjushri will come to test them. You should understand this.
