Sutra of Varied Parables

(One Two)

Once, in the kingdom of Shravasti, there was a poor family. In their courtyard grew a grapevine, with several clusters of fruit. The woman of the house wished to offer the grapes to a monk. At that time, the king had invited the monk to a meal for a whole month. But the poor family was not as powerful as the king. When the king finally agreed to release the monk after one month, the woman was finally able to make her offering. She said to the monk, "I have been wanting to give this offering for a month, and now my wish has come true." The monk said to her, "In that case, you have already made the offering for one month."

The woman replied, "But I only offered a single cluster of grapes. How could that count as an offering for a whole month?"

The monk said, "Because you had the intention to offer for an entire month, it counts as a month's offering."

There are eighteen things that are extremely difficult to attain in this world:

1. To be born during the time a Buddha is in the world is difficult. 2. Even if you are born when a Buddha is present, to actually be born as a human being is difficult. 3. Even if you are born as a human, to be born in a central civilized land (where the Dharma is available) is difficult. 4. Even if you are born in a central land, to be born into a respectable family is difficult. 5. Even if you are born into a respectable family, to have all four limbs and six sense faculties complete and healthy is difficult. 6. Even if your body is complete and healthy, to have wealth and property is difficult. 7. Even if you have wealth and property, to encounter good spiritual friends is difficult. 8. Even if you meet good spiritual friends, to gain wisdom is difficult. 9. Even if you gain wisdom, to develop a virtuous and compassionate heart is difficult. 10. Even if you develop a virtuous heart, to be able to practice generosity is difficult. 11. Even if you can practice generosity, to find a truly virtuous and worthy person to give to is difficult. 12. Even if you find such a virtuous person, to actually be able to go to them to make an offering is difficult. 13. Even if you go to them, to find the right moment or occasion is difficult. 14. Even if you find the right moment, to listen respectfully, ask questions, and speak words that are just and balanced is difficult. 15. Even if you speak just and balanced words, to truly understand wisdom is difficult. 16. Even if you understand wisdom, to be able to accept and embrace the profound teachings in their full depth is difficult. 17. Even if you can accept the profound teachings, to put them into practice and attain the path is difficult.

These are the eighteen difficult things.
