Chapter 8: The Merit Deity
World-Honored One! In the presence of the Tathāgata, Worthy of Offerings, Perfectly Enlightened, Accomplished in Wisdom and Conduct, Well-Gone, Knower of the World, Unsurpassed One, Tamer of Beings, Teacher of Gods and Humans, Buddha, World-Honored One—the Illuminating Buddha of the Jeweled Flower Merit Sea and Glazed Golden Mountain—I have planted roots of goodness in the past. Therefore, now, wherever I direct my thoughts, wherever I turn my gaze, wherever I go, I am able to bring boundless joy to hundreds of thousands of beings. Whether it be clothing, food, necessities for life, gold, silver, the seven treasures, genuine pearls, lapis lazuli, coral, amber, jade, cowrie shells—they shall lack nothing.
If there are those who can recite the sublime and profound *Sutra of Golden Light*, make offerings to all Buddhas and World-Honored Ones on my behalf, invoke my name three times, and offer incense; and after making offerings to the Buddhas, separately present incense, flowers, and various delicacies to me, scattering them in all directions—know that such a person will be able to gather wealth, treasures, and precious things. Because of this cause, the earth’s vitality will increase, the earth spirits and devas will all rejoice, the grains, sprouts, stems, branches, leaves, and fruits that are planted will flourish abundantly, and the tree spirits will be delighted, giving rise to immeasurable varieties of things. At that time, out of compassion for all beings, I will bestow upon them many necessities for life.
"World-Honored One! In the north, there is a city belonging to the Heavenly King Vaiśravaṇa called Animatā. In that city, there is a garden named Merit-Flower-Light, and within this garden lies a supreme grove called the Golden Banner, adorned with the seven precious substances of utmost splendor. This is where I constantly dwell.
If anyone wishes for the increase of wealth and treasures, that person should, in their own dwelling place, thoroughly clean and sweep, bathe their body, put on fresh white garments, and anoint themselves with fine fragrances. With utmost sincerity, they should invoke the name of the Buddha Ratna-puṣpa-vaidūrya, the World-Honored One, three times, and make offerings of worship, incense, and scattered flowers. They should also invoke the *Suvarna-prabhāsa Sūtra* three times and make sincere vows. Additionally, they should offer various fragrances, flowers, and delicious foods to me, scattering them in all directions. At that time, they should recite this verse:
Polifu Lou Na Zhe Li San Man Tuo Da She Ni Luo Qa Mo He Pi He Luo Qa Di San Man Tuo Pi Tuo Na Qa Di Mo He Jia Li Bo Di Bo Po Ni Sa Po Duo Hou San Man Tuo Xiu Bo Li Fu Li A Ye Na Da Mo Di Mo He Pi Gu Bi Di Mo He Mi Le Bo Seng Qi Di Xi Di Xi San Bo Qi Xi Di San Man Tuo A Tuo A Nou Po Luo Ni
This is the consecrated mantra, certain to bring auspiciousness and true blessings without fail. All beings who practice equally and those of moderate virtuous roots should receive, uphold, recite, and master it. For seven days and seven nights, observe the eight precepts, purify the mind morning and evening, and offer incense and flowers in worship to the Buddhas of the ten directions. Always dedicate the merit for oneself and all beings toward the complete attainment of Supreme Perfect Enlightenment, making this vow: "May all that I seek be fulfilled with auspiciousness."
Purify and sweep clean your own dwelling, house, or room. Whether in your own residence or in a secluded place, anoint the ground with fragrant clay, burn subtle incense, and spread clean, fine seats. Scatter the ground with various flowers and incense in preparation for me. At that time, in the space of a single thought, I will enter your dwelling and take my seat. From that day and night onward, I will ensure that wherever you reside—whether in a village, a monastic compound, or an open area—you will lack nothing. Whether money, gold, silver, jewels, cattle, sheep, grain, or rice, all that you require will be fully provided, and you will experience complete happiness.
If you can dedicate the supreme portion of the virtuous roots you have cultivated to me, I will never depart from you for the rest of your life. In your dwelling place, I will wholeheartedly guard and protect you, granting fulfillment according to your aspirations.
