> Instructions for Yunqi Attendant

> Before the Master entered Parinirvāṇa, for nineteen years, his attendant was with him day and night, attending to his every move—his daily life, his meals, his rest. Everything the Master did in private, the attendant witnessed; every subtle word he spoke, the attendant heard; every response he gave to circumstances, the attendant understood; every thought in his heart, the attendant knew. Thus, the Master's complete form, his appearance, his voice—all were clearly present before the attendant's eyes and ears. Even among the tens of thousands who gathered near the Master, none had the kind of true knowledge and direct perception that the attendant possessed. Now, in this assembly, everyone sees the Master as having passed into cessation—only the attendant does not perceive it as an end. In this final age of Dharma, practitioners of the Pure Land path all speak of visualizing the wondrous form of Amitāyus. But because they have never truly seen his face, even their visualization is not genuine. They speak of hearing Amitāyus teach the Dharma, yet even their contemplation is not authentic. As I see it, the Master is an emanation of Amitāyus himself. The attendant has served him for so long—how could he now forget the Master and seek teachings on the Dharma from others? I say to the attendant: You need not create any other mental image. Simply recall the Master as he was in life—his every model of conduct, his every standard of practice, his voice and speech, his manner and bearing, his meditative cultivation, his compassionate activity for the benefit of beings. Carefully, from head to foot, through the entire day and night, bring all of these to mind, one by one, in full detail. When you do this, each moment of recollection is the very moment Amitāyus appears. But if even a single thought of forgetfulness arises, that is the moment you betray his kindness and fall back into the cycle of birth and death. I, this old man, have no Dharma to speak. Yet I now place the Master's complete body directly into your heart. You must not cast it out. This is my old man's samādhi of self-concealment. Reflect on this carefully.
